Heroic poetry was central to the construction of Anglo-Saxon values, beliefs, and community identity and its subject matter is often analyzed as a window into Anglo-Saxon life. However, these poems are works of art as well as vehicles for ideology. Aesthetics of Nostalgia reads Anglo-Saxon historical verse in terms of how its aesthetic form interacted with the culture and politics of the period. Harvey Dorfman was an educator for twenty-seven years before entering the field of sport psychology. His stature in the field grew significantly during the twenty-six years of his second career. But through most of both professional pursuits, he was also a writer. Seven books and hundreds of newspaper columns and magazine articles have appeared under his name. This final volume is a collection of some of his favorite pieces. Included are personal reflections and social commentary, both sobering and satirical. Colonial Ideology and the classical 'Bildungsroman'
This book examines the ideological affinity that can be established between the classical ‘Bildungsroman’ and colonialist ideology on the basis of a literary analysis of ‘Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre’—considered by most critics to be the origin of the genre—and ‘Great Expectations’—one of the paradigmatic examples of the development of the Bildungsroman in English literature. This ideological affinity is understood as an example of what the Palestinian critic Edward Said has called a ‘structure of attitude and reference’: the convergence of different cultural manifestations that, although formally independent, contribute to a common purpose. The monograph also undertakes a study of the main characteristics of the classical ‘Bildungsroman’ from a formal and thematic point of view, and an analysis of the relationship between genre theories and Eurocentric discourses.
