Competitive Dynamics Of Air Transport In Brazil: 2008-2014

Commercial aviation in Brazil has been facing great changes in the past years, from the regulatory point of view to a competition perspective, given the increase in demand, revision of past legislation and the rise of new players in this market. The airline business has showed to be very dynamic in Brazil, with the rise and fall of a number of companies. One of them specifically, called VARIG – Portuguese acronym for Viação Aérea Rio-Grandense -, which stopped operating domestic and international routes in 2006, changed the market significantly, since it was the longest standing air company in the country and also the market leader. This scenario of disruption, after VARIG’s bankruptc...

With the knowledge that every mouthful may be your last comes a special flavor, an added piquancy, that is hard to resist. Not for nothing is gluttony a deadly sin. At first there were ten of them. Once the gilded youth of their city, they would meet each month to dine fabulously and celebrate their friendship and singularity. But 20 years on, the world is not as impressed with them as they anticipated. In his new friend Daniel thinks he has found the recipe to reinvigorate their meetings. Lucidio is mysteriously taciturn but in the privacy of Daniel's kitchen, his genius recreates their favourite dishes as a gastronomic experience like no other. One helping is never enough. Particularly for a group that have always wanted more ...

Shared Earth Modeling

Over the last two decades, earth modeling has become a major investigative tool for evaluating the potential of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Earth modelling must now face new challenges since petroleum exploration no longer consists in only investigating newly identified resources, but also in re-evaluating the potential of previously investigated reservoirs in the light of new prospecting data and of revised interpretations. Earth models incorporate a variety of different interpretations made on various types of data at successive steps of the modeling process. However, current modeling procedures provide no way to link a range of data and interpretations with a final earth model. For this reaso...

Photography in Argentina

From its independence in 1810 until the economic crisis of 2001, Argentina has been seen, in the national and international collective imaginary, as a modern country with a powerful economic system, a massive European immigrant population, an especially strong middle class, and an almost nonexistent indigenous culture. In some ways, the early history of Argentina strongly resembles that of the United States, with its march to the prairies and frontier ideology, the image of the cowboy as a national symbol (equivalent to the Argentine gaucho), the importance of the immigrant population, and the advanced and liberal ideas of the founding fathers. But did Argentine history truly follow a linear...

Abel and Cain

Appearing together in English for the first time, two masterpieces that take on the jazz age, the Nuremburg trials, postwar commercialism, and the feat of writing a book, presented in one brilliant volume The Death of My Brother Abel and its delirious sequel, Cain, constitute the magnum opus of Gregor von Rezzori’s prodigious career, the most ambitious, extravagant, outrageous, and deeply considered achievement of this wildly original and never less than provocative master of the novel. In Abel and Cain, the original book, long out of print, is reissued in a fully revised translation; Cain appears for the first time in English. The Death of My Brother Abel zigzags across the middle of the ...

Colonialism Past and Present

This collection of essays offers alternative readings of historical and literary texts produced during Latin America's colonial period. By considering the political and ideological implications of the texts' interpretation yesterday and today, it attempts to "decolonize" the field of Latin American studies and promote an ethical, interdisciplinary practice that does not falsify or appropriate knowledge produced by both the colonial subjects of the past and the oppressed subjects of the present. Using recent developments in postcolonial theory, the contributors challenge traditional approaches to Hispanism. The colonial situation under which these texts were composed, with all its injustices and prejudices, still lingers, and most studies have consistently avoided the connection between this colonial legacy and the situation of disenfranchised groups today. Colonialism Past and Present challenges discursive strategies that celebrate only European cultural traits, dismiss non-European cultural legacies, and solidify constructions of national projects considered natural extensions of European civilization since independence from Spain.
