Karya desain sederhana dalam desain dasar memiliki 2 kategori besar yaitu karya dalam bentuk 2 dimensi serta karya dalam bentuk 3 dimensi. Karya 2 dimensi merupakan karya yang didalamnya terdapat panjang dan lebar dalam suatu bidang datar, tetapi tidak memiliki ketebalan dan kedalaman. Sebaliknya karya desain 3 dimensi merupakan karya yang yang didalamnya terdapat panjang dan lebar dan memiliki ketebalan serta kedalaman. Dalam dasar desain diajarkan bagaimana membentuk desain dalam ke dua kategori ini sesuai dengan tata rupa dan kaidah dasar desain serta prinsip seni rupa.
