Cognitive Foundations for Improving Mathematical Learning

Cognitive Foundations for Improving Mathematical Learning, Volume 5, the latest release in the Mathematical Cognition and Learning series, focuses on informal learning environments and other parental influences on numerical cognitive development and formal instructional interventions for improving mathematics learning and performance. Chapters cover the use of numerical play and games for improving foundational number knowledge, school math performance, the link between early math abilities and the approximate number system, and how families can help improve the early development of math skills. In addition, the book examines learning trajectories in early mathematics, the role of mathematic...

Introduction to Human Development and Family Science

Now in its second edition, Introduction to Human Development and Family Science was the first text to introduce human development and family studies (HDFS) as inextricably linked areas of study. Pioneers of research paradigms have acknowledged that the family is one setting in which human development occurs, and much work is inherently multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. This book helps to fortify an understanding of HDFS and subareas within it. Key features include: Chapters aligned with Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) Guidelines. An applied focus, with vignettes exploring diverse family structures and human experience, a brand-new appendix with helpful tips to encourage the effe...

The Social Science of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Social Science of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Call to Action for Researchers draws on theories derived from the social sciences to address the multitude of questions raised by the COVID-19 pandemic and to inspire a future generation of researchers. The book is designed to help promote recovery from the pandemic, to minimize the negative effects of similar events in the future, and to inform social science research going forward.

Promoting School Readiness and Early Learning

Grounded in cutting-edge developmental research, this book examines what school readiness entails and how it can be improved. Compelling longitudinal findings are presented on the benefits of early intervention for preschoolers at risk due to poverty and other factors. The volume identifies the cognitive, language, behavioral, motor, and socioemotional skills that enable young children to function successfully in school contexts. It explores specific ways in which school- and family-based interventions--including programs that target reading and language, math, self-regulation, and social-emotional development--can contribute to school readiness. The book also addresses challenges in the large-scale dissemination of evidence-based practices.

Scaling Up an Effective Pre-K Mathematics Intervention

Due to the socioeconomic status-related gap in early mathematical knowledge and the need to improve low-income children's readiness for school mathematics, the authors developed an intervention, "Pre-K Mathematics", and rigorously evaluated it over several studies. This math intervention has been found to be highly effective at improving pre-k children's mathematical knowledge relative to a control group. In this presentation, the authors examine the pre-k mathematics intervention implemented at a customary level of scale and at a distance from the developer. Analyses will examine (1) effectiveness at scale across varied contexts, and (2) classroom practices that mediate, at least in part, effective math outcomes for young children.

There is a national need for effective interventions to improve school readiness and subsequent achievement in mathematics for students from low-income families. The purpose of this study was to implement and evaluate a 2-year preschool math intervention that began at preschool entry when children were 3 years of age and continued through the end of the pre-kindergarten (pre-K) year. Three principal objectives will be addressed in this presentation: (1) to evaluate the efficacy of a math curriculum for 3-year-olds implemented in the pre-pre-kindergarten (pre-pre-K) year of preschool; (2) to compare the impact of a 2-year math intervention (implemented during pre-pre-K and pre-K years) with a...

Educators are increasingly concerned about the low level of mathematics performance of U.S. students on the TIMSS and other international assessments of mathematics (National Mathematics Advisory Panel, 2008) as well as their insufficient preparation for mathematics standards, such as the Common Core State Standards. Students from low-income and minority backgrounds demonstrate lower levels of mathematics achievement than their peers from more advantaged backgrounds, and there is compelling evidence that this SES-related achievement gap in mathematics emerges prior to school entry. It is also known from a recent meta-analysis of several large longitudinal studies that children's mathematics ...
