Friction and Wear of Polymer Composites

  • Type: Book

  • Publisher: Elsevier

Providing a useful summary of current knowledge on the friction and wear properties of composite materials, this book fills the gap between publications on fundamental principles of tribology and those on the friction and wear behavior of metals and polymers. Detailed coverage is given of: the fundamental aspects of tribology in general and polymer composites in particular; the effects of the microstructure of composites on friction and wear behavior under different external loading conditions; and the problem of the control of friction and wear behavior in practical situations. Although emphasis is on polymer composites associated with bearing-type applications, part of the book is also dev...

Composite Materials

Composite Materials is a modern reference book, tutorial in style, covering functions of composites relating to applications in electronic packaging, thermal management, smart structures and other timely technologies rarely covered in existing books on composites. It also treats materials with polymer, metal, cement, carbon and ceramics matrices, contrasting with others that emphasise polymer-matrix composites. This functional approach will be useful to both practitioners and students. A good selection of example problems, solutions and figures, together with a new and vibrant approach, provides a valuable reference source for all engineers working with composite materials.

Metal matrix composites: Processing and Interfaces

Metal Matrix Composites: Processing and Interfaces provides a unified source of information on metal matrix composites (MMCs). This book contains three parts. Part 1 provides the introductory overview, focusing on the historical perspective on the state of the composites field. The synthesis and processing details on some standard and novel techniques used to fabricate composites are discussed in Part 2. Part 3 is devoted to reviewing techniques in probing, modeling, and modifying composite interfaces. Other topics include the diffusion brazing techniques, chemical vapor deposition, and in situ reinforcement of MMCs. The deformation processing of metal mixtures and optimizing properties of deformation-processed metal/metal composites are also covered in this text. This publication is useful to engineering students studying the processing and interfaces of MMCs.

The Effect of Molten Alkali Metals on Containment Metals and Alloys at High Temperatures

Corrosion of containment materials is the most serious problem in liquid-metal systems. Most high-temperature engineering metals such as refractory metals, nickel-base and cobalt-base superalloys, and the austenitic and ferritic stainless steels are sufficiently resistant to liquid sodium and NaK to be useful up to about 1600 F. The most important factor in the corrosion of these materials under given conditions of temperature and flow rate is the oxygen content of the sodium. No material is truly corrosion resistant to lithium, although the refractory metals tantalum, columbium, and molybdenum do have some potential for high-temperature service in engineering applications. Zirconium and pur...

Metal Matrix Composites: Thermomechanical Behavior discusses metal matrix composites, elaborating on that consists of two phases—fiber as reinforcement and metal as matrix. This book focuses on polymer matrix composites, including topics in metal matrix composites ranging from processing to fracture mechanics. The three basic types of composite materials—dispersion-strengthened, particle-reinforced, and fiber (whisker)-reinforced, are also described in detail. Dispersion-strengthened is characterized by a microstructure consisting of an elemental matrix within which fine particles are uniformly dispersed, while particle-reinforced is indicated by dispersed particles of greater than 1.0 μm diameter with a volume fraction of 5 to 40%. Fiber (whisker)-reinforced provides a distinguishing microstructural feature of fiber-reinforced materials, such as that the reinforcing fiber has one long dimension, while the reinforcing particles of the other two types do not. This publication serves as a reference data book to students and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of the thermomechanical behavior of metal matrix composites.

Life Prediction Methodology for Titanium Matrix Composites

Papers presented at the March 1994 symposium are organized into five sections that progress from basic understanding of mechanical damage mechanisms and environmental effects to life prediction methodology. Five papers discuss the interplay between interfacial strength, residual thermal stresses, an
