Portal Hypertension

Portal hypertension is a relatively common condition, the complications of which are frequently life threatening. Patients with portal hypertension represent an important por tion of the daily clinical work of abdominal radiologists, gastroenterologists and abdominal surgeons. During the past two decades the development of new radiological devices and of new percutaneous image-guided treatment methods has resulted in fundamental changes in the clinical management of patients with portal hypertension. During the same period tremen dous progress was achieved in the visualization of the numerous morphological and func tional changes observed in patients with portal hypertension, due to the clin...

Dendrimer-Based Drug Delivery Systems

The opportunities and challenges of using dendrimers to improve drug delivery Among pharmaceutical and biomedical researchers, the use of dendrimers in drug delivery systems has attracted increasing interest. In particular, researchers have noted that the volume of a dendrimer increases when it has a positive charge. If this property can be applied effectively, dendrimers have enormous potential in drug delivery systems, directly supplying medication to targeted human organs. With contributions from an international team of pioneers and experts in dendrimer research, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research efforts in designing and optimizing dendrimer-based drug de...

New Frontiers in Cytology

Diagnostic cytology has recently enjoyed increased attention and significance in modern research. Essential information on latest developments in methods and applications in cytology is provided by this book. Chapters review methodological advances, such as in cancer detection, and explore potential relationships to molecular biology. Also discussed are: viral infection, fundamentals of quantitative methods, and the revolutionary role of immunocytochemistry in diagnostic cell typing. The new insights offered by transmission and scanning electron microscopy into cellular structure and function are discussed, and the connections between cytology and histology are highlighted. Epidemiology in connection with cytology is incorporated in special reports. The current developments described here will become routine methods of the cytology of tomorrow.

Breast Diseases

Important contributions about the treatment modalities of breast cancer are presented in this book. The risks and limitations of breast conserving therapy of mammary carcinoma are dealt with. Newest findings show that this form of therapy has the same outcome as conservative treatment modalities. The book also considers controversial issues such as the treatment of mastopathy, precancerous, and non-invasive lesions of the breast. New, but not yet approved, regimes for the prevention of mammary carcinoma and open questions concerning adequate operative treatment are discussed. Latest results presented here show that all modern palliative chemotherapy has a certain but limited effect on outcome and that early detection and preventive therapy (surgical and hormonal) will be of great importance for improved chances of survival of breast cancer.
