Women at Risk
AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death among women of childbearing age and is increasing by about 8% a year in this group. * And yet, our understanding of the impact of HIV and AIDS on women's lives remains fragmented and incomplete. After a decade of struggling with mounting surveys of risk behavior, clinical trials, and behavioral interventions that were based primarily on experience with gay communities in large cities and, subsequently, on the needs of injection drug users, we have not given programs for women the attention they require if they are to be meaningful, effective, and gender appropriate. This book will introduce the reader to the range of complex issues of HIV and AIDS in women's lives. Ann O'Leary and Loretta Sweet Jemmott have assembled an impres sive list of authors who have contributed chapters from different disciplinary viewpoints. Preventing Youth Problems

Non-coding RNA and the Reproductive System
This book provides an overview of the role and function of regulatory RNAs that lack protein-coding potential in key reproductive tissues. This includes the role of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Despite the significant number of AIDS affected youth in the United States, the plight of these young people has been largely disregarded. This book presents the stories of several young people whose mothers had AIDS or had died from the disease. They speak directly about their experiences and their concerns. Individual and common themes in their stories are analyzed to gain insight into their problems and to develop an understanding of how best to respond to their needs. Some prominent themes shared by the participants are: longstanding unstable living arrangements; serious conflict with their mothers; multiple losses in the youth's lives, even before the AIDS crisis; the mother's past drug use; behavioral problems and difficulties with limits in the family, school, and the community; unsafe sexual behavior; and childbearing within a year of the mother's death. These issues are exacerbated by the poverty, discrimination, and violence in the communities in which these and many AIDS affected young people live.
The Neuroendocrine Leydig Cells and their Stem Cell Progenitors, the Pericytes
cells, and the testicular localization of the intermediate filament protein nestin, known to be expressed in neural stem cells, by our group was the first step to define mural cells (pericytes and vascular smooth muscle cells) of the testis microvascu- ture as the stem/progenitor cells of the adult Leydig cells. In summary, we were able to demonstrate specific proliferation of vascular progenitors and their subsequent transdifferentiation into steroidogenic Leydig cells, which – in addition – rapidly acquire neuronal and glial properties.
