Rochester has long been known for its leadership in optics, copying and photography. However, there were also more than 20 shoe manufacturers at one time; plus, the city was a major men’s clothing center and the country’s leading manufacturer of buttons. Many other national and international products also got their start in Rochester. Over the decades, author and historian Donovan Shilling has amassed a vast collection of these products, company photos and advertising material. He selected more than 165 Rochester born companies to feature in this “scrapbook.” You may remember some and you may have just heard of others. This study presents the findings of original field research into the design, practice, and varied outcomes of industrial policy in three sectors in Ethiopia: cement, leather and leather products, and floriculture. Given that there is a single industrial strategy, why do its outcomes vary across sectors? To what extent is this a function of the specific market and political economy features of each sector? Exploring the diversity of small firms, this contributed volume focuses on the crucial topic of work and the ways in which it is regulated, and offers reflections on the future of labour more generally. Traditionally managed through informal and adaptive processes, small firms allow us to understand the challenges and opportunities facing larger companies within an increasingly fragmented global production system. Analysing the case of Italy, a country characterised by a high number and wide variety of small firms, the authors draw on the results of a survey involving over 2,300 firms and face-to-face interviews with owner-managers working in 60 small and micro firms across several different sectors.
