Mahesh Dattani, b. 1958, an Indian English playwright.
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) aimed to be more than just a composer. He set out to redefine opera as a "total work of art" combining the highest aspirations of drama, poetry, the symphony, the visual arts, even religion and philosophy. Equally celebrated and vilified in his own time, Wagner continues to provoke debate today regarding his political legacy as well as his music and aesthetic theories.Wagner and His Worldexamines his works in their intellectual and cultural contexts. Seven original essays investigate such topics as music drama in light of rituals of naming in the composer's works and the politics of genre; the role of leitmotif in Wagner's reception; the urge for extinction inTrist...
Gender and marginality always appeals to Mahesh Dattani’s dramatic art. The fame of his dramas chiefly lies in his treatment of gender and marginality. His sole concern is to seek plea for the marginalized sections of people who are made victims on the basis of gender, race and religion and he hardly misses this aspect in his dramas. As a dramatist for the marginalized and the gender victims he always tries to win sympathy for them. His dramas tell the plights and sufferings of women, transgender and homosexuals along with people of other marginalized sections like minorities and AIDS victims. This anthology is a collaborative endeavour to make a reading of Dattani’s dramas in the present context and the authorial insight in this regard is deep and critical.
On his third adventure, Bhrigu Mahesh gets a visit from a famous builder called Govardhan Narayan, who is perplexed by his own house where he had lived for more than twenty years. It seems as if his kothi isn’t very accepting of tenants because as soon as the man puts it up for tenancy, mysterious events start to unfold. The old house is not at all fond of its new occupants and is forcing them to abandon it in sheer panic. When the fifth tenant hastily leaves the building, Mr. Narayan comes at the end of his wits and approaches Bhrigu Mahesh to solve this seemingly insoluble problem. Bhrigu accepts it at once but as soon as he begins to get to the heart of the mystery, his peace of mind is destroyed. This problem, it turns out, is not just a simple challenge but a puzzle which is going to shake the great detective’s faith in his own formidable talent and make him question his own splendid gift.
This book purports to examine in depth and detail the wide spectrum of human relationships depicted by Dattani, a theme that has not been examined consistently and comprehensively by the critics so far. In order to arrive at a balanced appreciation of his mind and art, an analysis of relationships within and outside the family, including those between husband and wife, between different generations, siblings, transgendered and the miscellaneous ones have been examined using mainly socio-psychological approach. Through a series of miscellaneous relationships like those between peers, friends, boss and subordinates, communities and even strangers, Dattani enlarges the range of his subject, revealing a vast variety of human ties which one forges and lives through in one’s life. His incisive and extensive treatment of the human relationships shows not only his insightful grasp of changing social realities but also of human nature, which deepens and enhances the appeal of his theatre, underlining the humanistic values of acceptance of diversity and difference, equality and freedom for a happy and meaningful social and individual life.
