The first volume deals with the political institutions of the Ottoman Empire, beginning with the life of Mohammed, excerpts from the Koran, and a discussion of the ethnic history of Turkey, before delving into the various rulers and regimes. The last two chapters of Volume I discuss the causes and results of the Russo-Turkish War and the finances/economic value of Turkey. The second volume is more concerned with Christianity: that is, nations under Turkey's influence, specifically Christian communities as either minorities within each state or as subject to the influence of Russia and/or the Ottoman Empire. Syria in particular gets a lot of attention, as does Armenia and Greece. A whole chapter is devoted to the history of the Orthodox Church in the region. A long discussion of the Order of the Assassins of Persia and Syria of the 11th and 12th centuries, and their secret sects.

TERRORISM AND POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN WEST AFRICA: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

While it could be arguably stated that West Africa has achieved remarkable and sustainable progress in the areas of democratic governance and economic growth, the sub-region, over the past few years, has been challenged by terrorism and other transnational security threats. Innocent civilians are continuously killed; security operatives and providers of humanitarian assistance targeted; properties and infrastructure wantonly destroyed; thus culminating in significant displacement of people and acute poverty. If these developments are not carefully and timeously addressed, they are capable of eroding progress so far recorded. It is against this background, that this Thesis undertakes a study of the different manifestations of terrorism and related transnational security challenges in West Africa, to explore the internal and external sources and drivers of instability; establish the linkages between terrorism and transnational threats; examine the various steps taken in recent time to strengthen the sub-region’s capacity to prevent and address the menace of terrorism and other security challenges, and make necessary policy recommendations based on comprehensive best practices.

Parasitic Protozoa

Updated and much expanded, the Second Edition of Parasitic Protozoa is designed to be useful to physicians, veterinarians, and research scientists concerned with diseases caused by protozoa in man, and in domestic and wild animals including fish, mollusks and insects, as well as the more commonly considered vertebrate animals. Each section contains information on disease pathogens, treatment, diagnosis, and epidemiology of the diseases caused by the various protozoans. The book is not limited to these medically-oriented subjects, but treats taxonomy, morphology, and metabolism of the organisms in such a way as to be of interest to scientists and graduate students working in the field of protozoology. The entire edition, published in ten volumes, is arranged so that subjects of common interest occupy individual volumes.

How should the world be organized? And how should values be prioritized? There is an ongoing struggle between two visions: one advocating a world economic system and the other a globla society. On the one hand are the transnational corporations and the politicians supporting them who are continuously working to gain access to cheap labor, natural resources, markets, and the promotion of a culture of consumerism. On the other hand are workers and citizens who seek to place human rights norms, the well-being of the individual, and environmental sustainability at the center of policy. While the globla Neoliberal network is rich in ressources, densely organized and rather clear in its goals, its...
