Global Environmental Change and International Law
This is one of the few books dealing with regime theory to be written from a legal point of view. Jurgielewicz's book is part of an effort to promote interdisciplinary research on the nature of the international legal order. Her work explores the concept of international regimes within the international legal order, utilizing the policy-oriented approach to international law. The study uses examples of global environmental change as models. By examining the general international law applicable to climate change and ozone layer depletion, the author attempts to explain the original need for regime formation in these areas. Next, Jurgielewicz looks at the role of regimes within international law, focusing on their formation, maintenance, source of legal obligation, and compliance mechanisms. The book concludes that regimes are present within the international legal order and play a vital role in maintaining that order. This book will appeal to students in law schools, graduate schools, or advanced undergraduate seminars covering international relations, international legal theory, international law, and international organizations.

Culture in World Politics
World politics can be viewed as the patterns of cooperation and conflict between groups of people with different cultural backgrounds. Surprisingly, though, for several decades the topics of culture in international relations has been largely ignored. Only recently an increasing interest has (re-)emerged in how world politics is affected by cultures, i.e. by collectively shared perceptions, norms and beliefs. Culture in World Politics contributes to this development by presenting a variety of ways in which the roles of cultures in world politics can be studied. A major aim of the book is to highlight alternative ways of thinking about the effects of culture on international relations, and to stimulate discussion on the relative merit of these various approaches. The book also shows the relevance of cultural studies for understanding two areas often assumed to be free of cultural influences: international violence, and the international political economy. The contributions not only include insightful theoretical discussions, but also show how illuminating empirical analyses can be undertaken with the help of cultural theories.
Democracy by Force
Since the end of the Cold War, the international community, and the USA in particular, has intervened in a series of civil conflicts around the world. In a number of cases, where actions such as economic sanctions or diplomatic pressures have failed, military interventions have been undertaken. This 1999 book examines four US-sponsored interventions (Panama, Somalia, Haiti and Bosnia), focusing on efforts to reconstruct the state which have followed military action. Such nation-building is vital if conflict is not to recur. In each of the four cases, Karin von Hippel considers the factors which led the USA to intervene, the path of military intervention, and the nation-building efforts which followed. The book seeks to provide a greater understanding of the successes and failures of US policy, to improve strategies for reconstruction, and to provide some insight into the conditions under which intervention and nation-building are likely to succeed.
Diplomatic Departures
During the nine years that the Conservatives under Brian Mulroney held power in Ottawa, Canadian foreign policy underwent a series of important departures from established policy.
