The Conquest of the Desert
Winner of the 2021 Thomas McGann Book Prize from the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies For more than one hundred years, the Conquest of the Desert (1878-1885) has marked Argentina's historical passage between eras, standing at the gateway to the nation's "Golden Age" of progress, modernity, and--most contentiously--national whiteness and the "invisibilization" of Indigenous peoples. This traditional narrative has deeply influenced the ways in which many Argentines understand their nation's history, its laws and policies, and its cultural heritage. As such, the Conquest has shaped debates about the role of Indigenous peoples within Argentina in the past and present. The Conquest of the Desert brings together scholars from across disciplines to offer an interdisciplinary examination of the Conquest and its legacies. Applicative Constructions in the World’s Languages
This book presents a state-of-the-art cross-linguistic survey of applicative constructions in the functional-typological tradition. An introductory section sets the terminological and analytical stage, presents the methodology used by the different chapters, and provides a typological outlook. The individual contributions address the morphological, syntactic and semantic variation of applicatives, as well as their discourse-pragmatic function. They cover all major language families and some isolates that feature some illuminating version of the phenomenon, paying special attention to language-internal variation and unity. The phenomena surveyed range from those instances usually considered canonical (valency-increasing, syntactically and semantically predictable, productive, dedicated, and optional) to those occasionally understudied in descriptive works and frequently neglected in comparative studies (valency-neutral, rather unpredictable, lexicalized, syncretic, and/or obligatory).

Reduplication in Indigenous Languages of South America
The morphological process of reduplication occurs in languages throughout the world. Reduplication in indigenous languages of South America is the first volume to focus on reduplication in South America. The indigenous languages of South America remain under-documented and little accessible to theoretical linguistics. Most regions and language families of the continent are represented in articles based on recent fieldwork by the authors. Included are data concerning a diverse set of reduplication phenomena from the Andes, Amazonia, and other regions of the continent. A wide range of language families and isolates are discussed, such as Tupian, Quechuan, Mapuche, Tacanan, Arawakan, Barbacoan, and Macro-Jê. Several languages present unusual properties, some of which violate presumed universals, such as no partial without full reduplication.

Esta obra presenta una serie de investigaciones acerca de las prácticas y métodos de documentación sobre ocho lenguas fuegopatagónicas: selk'nam, haush, alakaluf / kawesqar, yagan, aonekko ’a’ien, teushen, günün a yajüch y mapuzungun realizadas en la región en el último tercio del siglo xix y hasta mediados del xx en un contexto de expropiación territorial y genocidio de los pueblos preexistentes. Además, pone a disposición los documentos inéditos de estas lenguas que han permanecido albergados en repositorios de Argentina, Chile, Alemania e Italia. La publicación procura visibilizar el trabajo de las y los coproductores de los pueblos originarios en la recolección de información y métodos de documentación de sus lenguas así como en las condiciones materiales en que se desarrollaron.
