I Will Come Back for You

'Extraordinary ... one of the most moving and uplifting stories of the war' Keith Lowe 'A remarkable book' - The Telegraph A gripping account of hidden identity, military courage, and an against-all-odds reunion. Four days after Germany's surrender in May 1945, a young British officer headed east into Germany. But this was no ordinary soldier. Manfred Gans was searching for his family. As a Jewish boy in Nazi Germany, he fled to England. Once he could, he enlisted, serving in the elite British 'Three Troop' unit, comprised of German-speaking refugees, and joined the D-Day landings. Working undercover, he gained vital intelligence, liberated occupied France and the Netherlands, and saved lives on both sides. Meanwhile, he dreamed of a reunion with his family trapped behind enemy lines, and with his childhood sweetheart, Anita. As the war ended, chaos reigned in Germany: defeated Wehrmacht soldiers faced columns of U.S. and British soldiers, concentration camp survivors encountered SS guards, and Soviet military roadblocks controlled the route east. Manfred overcame them all, finally reaching the place his parents were last seen: Theresienstadt ... Translated by Rachel Stanyon

This is the remarkable story of an entrepreneurial firm that helped to create the petrochemical industry as we know it today. The author also highlights the important role chemical engineers played in developing and commercializing new technologies based on the conversion of hydrocarbons into petrochemicals, which also led to the transfer of technological dominance from Germany to the United States. These developments are illustrated by the participants’ personal histories, in the form of interviews and recorded oral histories. In addition, the book presents a highly relevant case study for engineers and managers in the chemical industry.

Generation Exodus

This text is a generational history of the young people whose lives were irrevocably shaped by the rise of the Nazis. Half a million Jews lived in Germany when Hitler came to power in 1933. Over the next decade, thousands would flee. Among these refugees, teens and young adults formed a remarkable generation. They were old enough to appreciate the loss of their homeland and the experience of flight, but often young and flexible enough to survive and even flourish in new environments. This generation has produced such disparate figures as Henry Kissinger and "Dr Ruth" Westheimer. Walter Laqueur has drawn on interviews, published and unpublished memoirs and his own experiences as a member of this group of refugees, to paint a vivid and moving portrait of Generation Exodus.

The Last Generation of the German Rabbinate

After the Nazi seizure of power on January 30, 1933, over 250 German rabbis, rabbinical scholars, and students for the rabbinate fled to the United States. The Last Generation of the German Rabbinate follows their lives and careers over decades in America. Although culturally uprooted, the group's professional lives and intellectual leadership, particularly those of the younger members of this group, left a considerable mark intellectually, socially, and theologically on American Judaism and on American Jewish congregational and organizational life in the postwar world. Meticulously researched and representing the only systematic analysis of prosopographical data in a digital humanities database, The Last Generation of the German Rabbinate reveals the trials of those who had lost so much and celebrates the legacy they made for themselves in America.

Summary of Leah Garrett's X Troop

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 In September 1937, the young man who would become Colin Anson sat with his father at a beer hall in Frankfurt. He was only 15 years old, and it was exciting for him to enter the grown-up world of the Bierhalle. #2 The beer hall was packed with German American tourists. The atmosphere was tense, and the only sound was Lorna thumping her tail against the sawdust-covered floor. Colin’s father, who was Jewish, was arrested for speaking out against the Nazis. #3 In 1937, when Colin was fifteen, his father was taken away by the Nazis. The death of his father was the defining moment of his life. He had always idolized Curt, and saw him as a role model of the type of man he wanted to be. #4 Colin’s father had protected him from the knowledge that he was Jewish, but when he was told that he was half Jewish, his views on the Nazis changed almost immediately. The situation for the Jews of Frankfurt became much worse after the Night of Broken Glass in 1938, when thousands of Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps.
