Museus para o povo português
O Museu de Arte Popular e o discurso etnográfico do Estado Novo. Com a Exposição do Mundo Português e o chamado Plano dos Centenários, desenvolvido a partir de 1937, surgiu a ideia, proposta por Luís Chaves, de criar museus regionais nas capitais de Distrito, com o intuito de guardar as memórias locais. Com o mesmo propósito, foram criados, ao longo da década de 40, pequenos museus rurais, nas Casas do Povo, que se desenvolveram um pouco por todo o país. A proximidade destas instituições às populações não foi descurada, aproveitando-a para enaltecer um ideal rural. Tudo isto, enquanto nascia na capital o Museu de Arte Popular, com raízes na grande exposição de 1940. A obra Museus para o Povo Português tenta refletir a componente ideológica que o Estado transportou para a criação deste tipo de museus, tomando o Museu de Arte Popular como referência e a etnografia como elemento de união de todo o povo português, com diferenças, mas também com vários traços comuns nas crenças, na religião e nos costumes.

The Commentaries of the Great Alfonso Dalboquerque, Second Viceroy of India
The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. Volumes 53, 55, 62 and 69 of the series contain the English translation of The Commentaries of the Great Afonso Dalboquerque, translated and edited by Walter de Grey Birch. Afonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515) was a Portuguese naval officer and nobleman whose successful military campaigns helped establish Portugal's colonies in India. Volume 3 contains an account of his second, successful conquest of Goa in November 1510 and the capture of Malacca in 1511.
