In Quest of the Craft
INFORUM is a research project started more than forty five years ago by Clopper Almon. The focus is on the development of dynamic, interindustry, macroeconometric models to forecast the economy in the long run. Over the last 30 years, the Inforum approach to model building has been shared by economists in many different countries. Researchers have focused much of their efforts to developing a linked system of international interindustry models with a consistent methodology. A world-wide network of research associates use similar methods and a common software obtaining comparable results to produce studies of common interest to the group. Inforum partners have shared their research in an annual conference since 1993. The XXII Inforum World Conference was held in Alexandria, Virginia in September 2014 and this book contains a selection of papers presented during the sessions. All these contributions share an empirical and pragmatic orientation that is very useful for policymakers, business, and applied economists. Some papers are devoted to specific topics (productivity, energy, international trade, demographic changes) and some others are oriented to model building and simulations.
Cars and the Green Transition: Challenges and Opportunities for European Workers
Reducing transport sector emissions is an important pillar of the green transition. However, the transition to electric vehicles (EV) portends major changes in vehicle manufacturing activity, on which many livelihoods in Europe depend. Using the heterogeneity across European countries in the speed of transition to EV production and variation in sectoral and regional exposure to the automotive sector, this paper offers early evidence of the labor market implications of the EV transition. Our results suggest that the transformation of the auto sector is already having an adverse impact on employment in the affected sectors and regions, which can be expected to grow at least in the near term. Many of the affected workers will be able to retire and our analysis suggests that those who will have to transition to new “greener” jobs have a fair chance to do so when compared to other workers in the manufacturing sector. Furthermore, we find evidence that active labor market policies, specifically training, can help to reduce the adjustment costs for the affected workers.

Das QuBe-Projekt: Modelle, Module, Methoden
Seit 2007 wird im Projekt QuBe über die zukünftige Entwicklung des Arbeitsmarkts und deren Folgen geforscht. Der Reader stellt die Annahmen, Daten und die Basis der Projektionen vor, die im Projekt QuBe genutzt werden. Projektionen über die Entwicklung des Arbeitsmarkts ergeben sich aus der Beobachtung von Vergangenen und dem, was gegenwärtig als richtungsweisend gilt. Die theoretischen und empirischen Grundlagen sind wichtig, um Projektionen als reine Rechenmodelle richtig zu verstehen und angemessen zu interpretieren. Seit der Erstveröffentlichung werden die QuBe-Projektionen in einem regelmäßigen zweijährigen Rhythmus erneuert. Federführend sind das Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (BIBB) und das Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung (IAB) unter Mitwirkung der Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftliche Strukturforschung mbH (GWS).
