The world in a sea
The Mediterranean, both a sea and a theatre, has served throughout history as a fundamental crossroads for the political-religious dynamics and international tensions that characterize the various worlds, east and west, south and north, that meet in this basin. Starting from these premises, the present work examines - within a chronological span that goes from the conclusion of the Second World War to the end of Pius XII’s pontificate - the contribution offered by the Holy See and by Catholics from different national contexts in deciphering the role of the Mediterranean Sea within the wider global context. As such, it constitutes a reflection on this geographical space with its peculiar cultural, economic, political, and religious realities by highlighting the role played by the Mediterranean in the elaboration of visions and projects of civilization. This work is the fruit of a wider research programme called Occidentes - Horizons and projects of civilization in the Church of Pius XII. It brings together the work of seven historians from different European Universities.
Fundamental Theology of the Priesthood, A
The Symposium for a Fundamental Theology of the Priesthood, held at the Vatican from February 17 to 19, 2022, inaugurated a new phase of theological and pastoral reflection in the context of contemporary questions regarding the ministry of priests and the priesthood of the baptized. The deepening of the relationship between the two participations—baptismal and ministerial—in the one priesthood of Christ is fundamental for renewing the mission of the Church in the spirit of openness and dialogue of the Second Vatican Council. This perspective is also pertinent for the promotion and communication of all vocations, especially that of women, whose charisms are yet to be fully recognized and integrated in their rightful place within the life of the Church. Finally, and no less important, this reflection offers synodal practice a solid theological foundation for making the participation of the faithful dynamic, which must not only correct the limitations and defects of the exercise of the ordained ministry, but also actively and permanently exercise the gifts and charisms that the Holy Spirit has poured out on all baptized people.
Understanding the Synod on Synodality, 2023 Session
No synod in modern times has grappled with so much contention and doubt from personages high in the church’s hierarchy. The author situates this in context, guiding the reader through the theological and canonical footprints leading from Vatican II to the Synod on Synodality and outlining the communio ecclesiology at the base of this Synod. The book studies the Synod documents, especially the Instrumentum laboris and the Synod Synthesis Report, drawing out certain implications for a synodal church renewed by the Spirit and becoming a “community of mutual empowerment” in mission.
