Archea
Archea Associati's interests and research activities move from the landscape to the city, from building to design and, while focusing on architecture, the projects range from graphics to publishing - with the direction and editorial staff of the international architecture magazine "Area" - from exhibitions to applied research. Archea practices at the intersection of art, architecture and the factory, collaborating with living artists and with artists from the past, and developing a relationship not only with a material but also with its fabricators. In a symbiotic working relationship, the Archea studio, and factories with which it collaborates, trade knowledge and invention, the factory performing invaluable research that would normally be outside an architect's purview and financial reach.
MCM – Milan, Capital of the Modern
MCM - Milano Capital of the Modern, edited by Lorenzo Degli Esposti, is made up of texts and images from over 300 contributors from Europe and the US, across three generations, involved in the activities of the Padiglione Architettura in EXPO Belle Arti of Vittorio Sgarbi, a programme by the Regione Lombardia hosted in the Grattacielo Pirelli during the EXPO 2015. They investigate the relationships between modern architecture, the city of Milan (Razionalismo, reconstruction, Tendenza, Radical Design, up to current research) and the city in general, between single and specific works and the large scale of the urban territory, in the contradictions between architecture autonomy and its dependence on specific place and historical time. The idea of MCM is that each capital of the Modern brings an original version of modernity in architecture: in the specific Milanese case, this kind of Modern is characterized by the simultaneous presence of abstract, systematic and syntactic features and an ontological conception of both buildings and architectural and urban voids.

Il volume illustra l'opera completa di Kengo Kuma, cercando di svelare il continuo e dialettico rapporto tra materia e forma che l'architetto continuamente insegue e realizza nei suo progetti. L'estetica zen è la fonte di ispirazione di Kuma. Con l'aggregazione di pochi elementi, in sintonia con la linea concettuale indicata proprio dalla filosofia Zen, l'architetto definisce spazi di pura contemplazione. Spazi fluidi in cui il vuoto si manifesta come presenza e non come assenza, diviene luogo di pensiero e non silenzio sterile. Ad una parte introduttiva, segue una raccolta di architetture già realizzate, ma anche alcune in fase di costruzione o di progettazione che cercano di mostrare il processo di genesi progettuale e materiale dell'opera di Kuma, caratterizzata dalla ricerca compositiva applicata ai materiali naturali come elementi costitutivi della fabbrica. Il volume accompagnerà la mostra dedicata all'illustre architetto giapponese che si terrà nell'autunno prossimo al Palazzo della Ragione di Padova.

The Architecture of Use
By analyzing ten examples of buildings that embody the human experience at an extraordinary level, this book clarifies the central importance of the role of function in architecture as a generative force in determining built form. Using familiar twentieth-century buildings as case studies, the authors present these from a new perspective, based on their functional design concepts. Here Grabow and Spreckelmeyer expand the definition of human use to that of an art form by re-evaluating these buildings from an aesthetic and ecological view of function. Each building is described from the point of view of a major functional concept or idea of human use which then spreads out and influences the spatial organization, built form and structure. In doing so each building is presented as an exemplar that reaches beyond the pragmatic concerns of a narrow program and demonstrates how functional concepts can inspire great design, evoke archetypal human experience and help us to understand how architecture embodies the deeper purposes and meanings of everyday life.
