-An important monograph outlining the design and production of the Antinory Winery in Chianti Classico This updated third edition of a classic book shows the Antinori Windery, located in the extraordinary hilly landscape covered by the vineyards of Chianti, halfway between Florence and Siena. The client required a building that enhanced the surrounding landscape and territory, and bore witness to the cultural and social valence of the places where wine is made. The conceptual theme of the project has taken the form of a shell that is wholly below ground, without roofs, walls, streets and parking spaces, according to a design which attempts a difficult but necessary reconcilement between the ...

This book features projects by Archea Associati, a firm of architects and designers founded in Florence in 1988, that demonstrate how materials can be used in innovative ways, while still honoring their traditional characteristics. Glass, terracotta, concrete and wood are just a few of the elements they work with. Examples of ancient and contemporary materials are featured throughout this well-illustrated volume. A gallery of photographic images accompanied by drawings and descriptive texts illustrate each building, alternating between details and general views, from the basic elements to the complete work as a whole.

The Green Energy Laboratory (GEL) is a research center for low environmental impact building technologies on the the Minhang Campus of Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. Created in collaboration between the university and the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea Protection, it was designed and built by the Florentine architectural firm Archea Associati in 2012. This book features critical essays, technical drawings, photos of the construction site and the completed project, and illustrates the harmony of this structure through its perfect blend of tradition, architectural ingenuity, and sustainability. The GEL building is based around a central courtyard with a retractable roof. The top, or third floor, is recessed in relation to the main block, with a steeply sloped roof to house solar panels. The outer shell of the building's double skin is composed of terracotta elements designed to form pictograms common in the Chinese language. Designing Sustainable Factories

Economic constraints and lack of knowledge often prevent companies - especially small and medium enterprises - from harmonizing their facilities with the landscape. As a result, factories significantly impact the quality of our living environment, in terms of physical effects on the ecosystem, perceptual interferences with the surroundings, and disturbances on local communities. At both the design and maintenance stages, a set of appropriate tools can assist businesses in becoming more aware of their impacts and identifying possible mitigation strategies. The book presents an assessment tool and a library of inspiring design tactics for factories, with examples of the benefits and synergies for the environment, the scenery, the community, and the company itself. The purpose is to elicit more than a simple reflection about what a sustainable factory entails. It is rather to encourage and assist both businesses and designers in mitigating the impact of industrial facilities on the landscape as holistically as possible.

Alt-Form

In a world that is missing a central theoretical voice in architecture, now more than ever it is time to solicit emergent voices on the topic of‘alternative formalisms’(Alt-Form). This issue of AD aims to reach peripheral disciplines in order to support an architecture that no longer operates as a standalone field of study, and is rather one that responds to broader, urgent and pluralistic cultural shifts. In the existing contemporary landscape of visually oriented fields of study, casual compositions and other formless expressions have begun to re-emerge, particularly in the disciplines of art, architecture and popular image culture. In architecture, with the rise of the digital, the la...
