Combat Muay Boran

Combat Muay Boran represents a hands-on approach to Thailand's original traditional fighting style, scientifically structured for hand-to-hand fighting. Compared to the spectacular choreographed performances so popular today in martial arts films and demonstrations, Combat Muay Boran stands out for its primary goal: to empower men and women to fight for their own safety. The techniques illustrated are based on the ancient Chern Muay fighting style: the aggressive use of the 9 natural weapons of the body (Nawarthawooth) to attack, defend and counterattack. In addition, this volume shows the use of the four main traditional attack systems: Throwing, Crushing, Grasping, Breaking.

Formula 1 in Camera 1980-89

The 1980s was a momentous decade in Formula 1 and this all-colour book, featuring magnificent images by the renowned German photographer Rainer Schlegelmilch, captures the extraordinary drama of that period. Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell all made their debuts in this decade and became, with Nelson Piquet, the stars of the era - they were arch rivals equipped, at one stage, with the most powerful racing engines of all time. McLaren and Williams first established themselves as regular winners in this period, and these teams, with Ferrari, remain big players today. This was a decade when Formula 1 was transformed by political upheaval, technical innovation and extended TV coverage...

Searching the Heavens and the Earth

Jesuits established a large number of astronomical, geophysical and meteorological observatories during the 17th and 18th centuries and again during the 19th and 20th centuries throughout the world. The history of these observatories has never been published in a complete form. Many early European astronomical observatories were established in Jesuit colleges. During the 17th and 18th centuries Jesuits were the first western scientists to enter into contact with China and India. It was through them that western astronomy was first introduced in these countries. They made early astronomical observations in India and China and they directed for 150 years the Imperial Observatory of Beijing. In the 19th and 20th centuries a new set of observatories were established. Besides astronomy these now included meteorology and geophysics. Jesuits established some of the earliest observatories in Africa, South America and the Far East. Jesuit observatories constitute an often forgotten chapter of the history of these sciences.

One of the ideas of Bruce Lee's jeet kune do concept is to look beyond the individual styles of martial arts to grasp the concepts that bind all martial systems. In this book, Burton Richardson, one of the foremost authorities on Bruce Lee's art and concept, breaks down these concepts so that martial artists of all disciplines can better understand this holistic approach to training. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs, the book features pictorial demonstrations of how these concepts can be applied in self-defense. This is not a book about a particular system, but about how the individual martial artist can practice more efficiently and with greater understanding.

The formative years of the 1950s are explored in this fourth installment of Evro's decade-by-decade series covering all Formula 1 cars and teams. When the World Championship was first held in 1950, red Italian cars predominated, from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati, and continued to do so for much of the period. But by the time the decade closed, green British cars were in their ascendancy, first Vanwall and then rear-engined Cooper playing the starring roles, and BRM and Lotus having walk-on parts. As for drivers, one stood out above the others, Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, becoming World Champion five times. Much of the fascination of this era also lies in its numerous privateers and als...
