Quanto maior a coleção de objetos sublimes de um santuário, maior seu carisma religioso. Locais onde céu e terra se unem, os vestígios sagrados funcionavam como polos de atração de peregrinos. O contexto hispânico, marcado pela dominação muçulmana e por disputas pela primazia episcopal, tornou-se complexo e singular. A proliferação de relíquias neste território contribuiu para delimitar espaços especiais, que teriam prestígio diferenciado por sua sacralidade.

Queen as King traces the origins of San Isidoro in León as a royal monastic complex, following its progress as the site changed from a small eleventh-century palatine chapel housed in a double monastery to a great twelfth-century pilgrimage church served by Augustinian canons. Its most groundbreaking contribution to the history of art is the recovery of the lost patronage of Queen Urraca (reigned 1109-1126). Urraca maintained yet subverted her family’s tradition of patronage on the site: to understand her history is to hold the key to the art and architecture of San Isidoro. This new approach to San Isidoro and its patronage allows a major Romanesque monument to be understood more fully than before.
Mudejarismo and Moorish Revival in Europe examines key aspects related to the reception of Ibero-Islamic architecture in medieval Iberia and 19th-century Europe. It challenges prevalent readings of architecture and interiors whose creation was the result of cultural encounters. As Mudéjar and neo-Moorish architecture are closely connected to the Islamic world, concepts of identity, nationalism, religious and ethnic belonging, as well as Orientalism and Islamoscepticism significantly shaped the way in which they have been perceived over time. This volume offers art historical and socio-cultural analysis of selected case studies from Spain to Russia and opens the door to a better understanding of interconnected cultural and artistic phenomena. Now fully open access and with an updated introduction to ongoing research, an additional chapter, composite bibliographies, and indices, this multidisciplinary volume opens fresh ways into the investigation of medieval objects and textiles through historical, art historical, and technical analyses. Carbon-14 dating, iconography, and social history are among the methods applied to material and textual evidence, together shining new light on the display of rulership in medieval Iberia. Elementos construtores de espiritualidade, as relíquias representavam a continuidade da presença dos mortos especiais entre os vivos. Corpos santos, mesmo que fragmentados, além de objetos e imagens, eram a expressão concreta dessa permanência. Impulsionando a ocupação e cristianização de territórios, o simbolismo atribuído aos fragmentos de Cristo e dos santos foram responsáveis pela instrumentalização da doutrina cristã, atraindo fiéis e ampliando as fronteiras entre o mundo natural e o espiritual. A veneração das relíquias faz parte das raízes históricas da fé cristã e do quadro cultural da Europa medieval, acabando por ter também um impacto significativo na esfera sociopolítica.
