Colourful professors
Portraits give an insight into the times and local colour of a place or an institution. This evocative title reproduces a selection of portraits of the professors of the University of Amsterdam commissioned over the centuries since 1632. The collection of these portraits, numbering some 1500, represents the history of the university, as well as the flamboyance and unconventionality of some of the Amsterdam scholars.
Humanism in an Age of Science
In 1632, the Amsterdam regents founded an Athenaeum or 'Illustrious School'. This kind of institution provided academic teaching, although it could not grant degrees and had no compulsory four-faculty system. Athenaeums proliferated in the first century after the Dutch Revolt, but few of them survived long. They have been interpreted as the manifestation of an evolving vision of the role of a higher education; this book, by contrast, argues that education at the Amsterdam Athenaeum was staunchly traditional both in methods and in substance. While religious, philosophical and scientific disputes rocked contemporary Dutch learned society, this analysis of letters, orations and disputations reveals that a traditional and Aristotelian humanism thrived at the Athenaeum until well into the seventeenth century.

Networks of Empire
Exchange programmes have been a part of US foreign relations since the nineteenth century, but it was only during and after World War II that they were applied by the US government on a large scale to influence foreign publics in support of strategic objectives. This book looks at the background, organisation, and goals of the Department of State's most prestigious activity in this field, the Foreign Leader Program. The Program (still running as the International Visitor Leadership Program) enabled US Embassies to select and invite talented, influential 'opinion leaders' to visit the United States, meet their professional counterparts, and gain a broad understanding of American attitudes and opinions from around the country. By tracking the operation of the Program in three key transatlantic allies of the United States a full picture is given of who was selected and why, and how the target groups changed over time in line with a developing US-European relationship. The book therefore takes a unique in-depth look at the importance of exchanges for the extension of US 'informal empire' and the maintenance of the transatlantic alliance during the Cold War.

Vervolgens worden de huidige inzichten over het verloop van de evolutie beschreven. Ten slotte wordt aandacht geschonken aan de mogelijkheden van de gentheorie en de gevaren die het ingrijpen in het erfelijkheidsmateriaal met zich mee kan brengen.

Amsterdamse kloosters in de Middeleeuwen verscheen in 1997 ter gelegenheid van het zeshonderdjarig bestaan van het Agnietenklooster bij een tentoonstelling over middeleeuwse kloosters in Amsterdam. Amsterdamse kloosters in de middeleeuwen is een bundel artikelen van mediaevisten en kunsthistorici. Materiële aspecten van het kloosterleven vormen het uitgangspunt: het landbezit en andere inkomstenbronnen, de kloostercomplexen, kunst- en gebruiksvoorwerpen, de bibliotheken. Aan de hand hiervan wordt een beeld geschetst van het dagelijkse en religieuze leven van de kloosterlingen. Het boek bevat tevens een integraal overzicht van alle materiële resten van Amsterdamse kloosters.

Vrouwen en vroomheid
In 1878 werd in de pastorie van de parochie Purmerend een pakket oorkonden gevonden die afkomstig bleken van het middeleeuwse Sint-Ursula-klooster. Toen in 2009 op de Koemarkt werd gegraven, kwamen bouwresten te voorschijn. Dit boek vertelt het verhaal van het klooster, dat werd bevolkt door zusters van de orde van boetvaardigheid (derde orde) van Sint-Franciscus. Het klooster behoort tot de vroege uitingen van de Moderne Devotie in Hollands Noorderkwartier.
