Except for the theme of love, these are not your father's sonnets. The poems in Marie Lecrivain's Philemon's Gambit seek or examine understanding and harmony, often observing their opposites through myth, history, and hard or compassionate reality. To this reader, the poems come across as both universal and personal. These are accessible writings whose simple observations are often the most telling, such as "April 29, 1945," the account of Hitler's wedding and subsequent suicide: "We know he didn't die alone." Even those who don't normally read sonnets will find this book enjoyable. ?Robert S. King, poet and editor of Kentucky Review
