As stated by its first editor, Dr. D. B. Roodyn, the primary goal of the series Subcellular Biochemistry is to achieve an integrated view of the cell by bringing together results from a wide range of different techniques and disciplines. This volume deals with the applications of fluorescence spectroscopy to membrane research. It seeks to present complementary biochemical and bio physical data on both the structure and the dynamics of biological membranes. Biophysics and biochemistry are improving more and more in their ability to study biomembranes, overlapping somewhat in this area and explaining the functioning of the whole cell in terms of the properties of its individual com ponents. Therefore, we have brought together an international group of experts in order to report on and review advances in fluorescence studies on biological membranes, thereby highlighting subcellular aspects. The first chapters present a critical evaluation of the current applications of dynamic and steady-state fluorescence techniques. Subsequent chapters dis cuss more specific applications in cells, biological membranes, and their con stituents (lipids, proteins).
Isozymes, I: Molecular Structure contains manuscripts presented at the Third International Conference on isozymes convened in April 1974 at Yale University. Separating 52 manuscripts into chapters, this book discusses the biology and biochemistry of isozymes. It also elucidates the multiple forms of mammalian DNA-dependent DNA polymerases, as well as RNA polymerases of maize, fungi, and Escherichia coli. Significant topics on some specific isozymes are given separately in other chapters.
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is Virginia's largest urban university with an enrollment of nearly 30,000 students on two campuses in Richmond and partnerships in Northern Virginia and Doha, Qatar. Leslie Kozak explores his early life to determine how the environment created his intense competitive spirit. This exploration of life takes the reader through Leslie’s years at St. Michael’s College School, a short interlude as a Trappist monk, success as a Toronto Maple Leaf, then followed within days by a depressed fracture of his skull that ended his hockey career. Out of this journey emerges a molecular geneticist who dedicates himself in a 45-year research career to the exploration of body heat production and energy metabolism in response to a cold environment and how they could provide solutions to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
