Discusses the racism and antisemitism in German and Austrian university fraternities from the late 19th century until the early 1930s, which overshadowed the original ideals of the fraternities which were those of the French Revolution. They were called "Farbenstudenten" due to the tri-colored banners which they carried. Relates to various personalities, Jews and non-Jews, who were affected by antisemitism in the fraternal organizations. Notes that the "Aryan paragraph", first introduced by Georg von Schönerer in his Linz Program of 1882, was embraced by many nationalistic German fraternities. At the same time, Jewish students were prevented from engaging in dueling, a right that had been honored since the founding of the Burschenschaft in 1815. Antisemitism spread from the nationalistic fraternities to Catholic fraternities and Alpine clubs.

This volume brings together twenty-two authors from various countries who analyze travelogues on the Ottoman Empire between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. The travelogues reflect the colorful diversity of the genre, presenting the experiences of individuals and groups from China to Great Britain. The spotlight falls on interdependencies of travel writing and historiography, geographic spaces, and specific practices such as pilgrimages, the hajj, and the harem. Other points of emphasis include the importance of nationalism, the place and time of printing, representations of fashion, and concepts of masculinity and femininity. By displaying close, comparative, and distant readings, the volume offers new insights into perceptions of "otherness", the circulation of knowledge, intermedial relations, gender roles, and digital analysis.
