For nearly a century British potters have invigorated traditional ceramic forms by developing or reinventing techniques, materials, and means of display. Things of Beauty Growing explores major typologies of the vessel--such as bowl, vase, and charger--that have defined studio ceramics since the early 20th century. It places British studio pottery within the context of objects from Europe, Japan, and Korea and presents essays by an international team of scholars and experts. The book highlights the objects themselves, including new works by Adam Buick, Halima Cassell, and Nao Matsunago, featured alongside works by William Staite Murray, Lucie Rie, Edmund de Waal, and others, many published here for the first time. Bringing together 17 works from private and public collections across the globe, this will be the first museum exhibition of Saville?s work ever to be held in Scotland, and only her third in the UK. The selection spans 26 years, from iconic early paintings such as Propped (1992) and Trace (1993-4), to recent charcoal and pastel drawings, demonstrating how Saville?s approach to depicting the human body has shifted over the course of her career. I'm a Real Photographer
This is the first comprehensive survey of the photography of Keith Arnatt. Born in Oxford, England, in 1930 and now retired, Arnatt established an international reputation in the late 1960s as a conceptual performance artist. In the mid-1970s, however, he surprised the art establishment by abandoning conceptual art. Feeling he had exhausted its possibilities, Arnatt announced his conversion to the then-unfashionable medium of photography. He subsequently worked prolifically over twenty-five years within a short radius of his home in South Wales, making photographic series-mainly of cats, dogs, and the debris of everyday life-that are conceptually sharp, often very funny, and offer a rich commentary on the history of photography. With a personal essay by Magnum photographer David Hurn and an illustrated, contextual essay by curator Clare Grafik, I'm a Real Photographer is published alongside the first major survey of Arnatt's photographs at the Photographers' Gallery in London.
