Utopia, Equity and Ideology in Urban Texts: Fair and Unfair Cities explores the complex interrelations of three key critical topics across a diverse range of urban writing. Interrogating the links and tensions between aesthetic and political priorities in the representation and imagining of urban life, the volume engages with work from a wide variety of linguistic and cultural origins and across a range of textual practices having the urban phenomenon as a common framing concern. Individual contributions discussing genre and literary fiction, poetic writing, documentary and essayistic texts, planning manifestos and municipal communications materials serve to demonstrate that the nuanced treatments of urban experience and potential which may be gleaned from across this textual spectrum act as a pragmatic corrective to purely conceptual approaches. As such, the volume consolidates the emerging dialogue between the fields of utopian studies and literary urban studies, understanding these as complementary approaches to the reading of the city and its textual prolongations.

Urban gardening and the struggle for social and spatial justice
The book presents an in-depth and theoretically-grounded analysis of urban gardening practices (re)emerging worldwide as new forms of bottom-up socio-political participation. By complementing the scholarly perspectives through posing real cases, it focuses on how these practices are able to address – together with environmental and planning questions – the most fundamental issues of spatial justice, social cohesion, inclusiveness, social innovations and equity in cities. Through a critical exploration of international case studies, this collection investigates whether, and how, gardeners are willing and able to contrast urban spatial arrangements that produce peculiar forms of social organisation and structures for inclusion and exclusion, by considering pervasive inequalities in the access to space, natural resources and services, as well as considerable disparities in living conditions.

Kleinstädte befinden sich in einer systematischen Aufmerksamkeitslücke der Raum- und Sozialwissenschaften. Stereotype Vorstellungen über die Kleinstadt konnten sich so seit Langem relativ unhinterfragt halten. Was wissen wir über Kleinstädte - und was nicht? In diesem Kompendium wird die Kleinstadtforschung in Deutschland aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchtet und ein umfassender Überblick zum aktuellen Stand in unterschiedlichen Themenfeldern gegeben. Grundlegende Begrifflichkeiten, Methoden und Daten werden dabei ebenso adressiert wie konzeptionelle Fragen von Urbanität und Ruralität sowie Zentralität und Governance. Von besonderem Interesse ist das Leben in Kleinstädten, und so werden soziodemographische, sozialräumliche und wirtschaftliche Strukturen und Entwicklungen sowie Aspekte von Mobilität und Digitalisierung in Kleinstädten betrachtet. Knapp 30 Prozent der Einwohner*innen Deutschlands leben in Kleinstädten, die in Speckgürteln der Metropolregionen oder in peripheren Räumen liegen. Im ländlichen Kontext können Kleinstädte wichtige Anker sein, anderswo dienen sie eher als Wohn- und Erholungsorte. Das alltägliche Zusammenleben in und die Zukunft von Kleinstädten handeln die Akteur*innen vor Ort auf vielfältige Weise aus. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes beleuchten die Heterogenität von Kleinstädten durch diverse Fallstudien mit unterschiedlichen methodischen Ansätzen. In Reflexionen dieser Zugänge zeigen sie die Potentiale einer interdisziplinären Kleinstadtforschung auf und nehmen Themen wie Digitalisierung, Mobilität und Migration in den Blick.
