News of María of Ágreda's exceptional attributes spread from her cloistered convent in seventeenth-century Ågreda (Spain) to the court in Madrid and beyond. Without leaving her village, the abbess impacted the kingdom, her church, and the New World; Spanish Hapsburg king Felipe IV sought her spiritual and political counsel for over twenty-two years. Based upon her transcendent visionary experiences, Sor María chronicled the life of Mary, mother of Jesus of Nazareth, in Mystical City of God, a work the Spanish Inquisition temporarily condemned. In America, reports emerged that she had miraculously appeared to Jumano Native Americans - a feat corroborated by witnesses in Spain, Texas, and ...

This work is extracted from the four volume set, the Mystical City of God by Mary of Agreda, being a life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This work will be useful for meditation during Passiontide and Holy Week and at other times, when devout Catholics wish to meditate on our Lord's Passion.

Venerable Mary of Agreda, the well known Religious Sister and Mystic of the Seventeenth Century recounts many of her intimate revelations received from Our Lord and Our Lady in her Spiritual Classic, The Mystical City of God, an immense work of over a thousand pages. In this book, Fr. Higgins offers a carefully curated and edited compendium of meditations drawn from the saint’s masterpiece, assigning a relevant text for contemplation to each bead of the Holy Rosary. In this work, the scenes of the Holy Rosary, so familiar to us, are brought life in a new way, dramatically enriched and expanded through the technicolour details so uniquely characteristic of the visions of Venerable Mary, to whom was shown, step by step, moment by moment, Our Lady’s perspective on the entirety of the Life of Christ. Additional to the 15 Traditional Mysteries of the Holy Rosary and the Mysteries of Light, an additional set of mysteries, the Hopeful Mysteries, are also included. These allow us to join Venerable Mary in her contemplation of the events in the life of Our Lady prior to the Annunciation and her prophetic foreshadowing.

The Visions of Sor María de Agreda

Sor María de Agreda (1602-65) was a Spanish nun and visionary who is best known as the author of the widely read biography of the Virgin Mary, The Mystical City of God, and as the missionary who "bilocated" to the American Southwest, reportedly appearing to Indians there without ever leaving Spain. Her role as advisor to King Philip IV contributed further to her legend. Clark Colahan now offers the first major study of Sor María's writings, including translations of two previously unpublished works: Face of the Earth and Map of the Spheres and the first half of her Report to Father Manero, in which she reflects on her bilocation.
