This highly regarded social history of Nantucket treats the purchase and settlement of the island, the early proprietors, and various events in Nantucket history, such as Nantucket's role in the Revolution. The balance of the work consists of histories of some thirty founding families. Genealogists should also consult the appendices for a list of Quakers who visited Nantucket between 1664 and 1847.
The Reverend William Douglas served both St. James Northam Parish (Dover Church) in Goochland County and in Manakin Town which was part of King William Parish. King William Parish was in Goochland County during this time period but is now in Powhatan County because of county boundary changes.

Written as a dissertation in history at the U. of Virginia, this study recreates the societal mores displayed at summer resorts at Virginia Springs from 1790-1860, as this was recorded in the letters and other archives of families who sojourned there. Lewis (history, Widener U.) suggests that her history provides a new insight into plantation society by recording responses to unusual events and lack of routine. This long out-of-print collection of the oldest recorded Lancaster County marriage bonds furnishes, in each instance, the name of the groom, the maiden name of the bride, and the name of the surety (often a relative). The nearly 2,000 bonds are arranged alphabetically according to the surname of the groom, and a bride's index at the back of the volume makes for even greater convenience.
