In Freedom's Cause

Eight hundred and six of Hawaii’s sons gave their lives while serving in the armed forces of the United States during the Second World War. In Freedom’s Cause is a tribute and a memorial to these men. For this roll of honor, the compilers have tried to secure biographical data and photographs of all men of Hawaii who died in military service between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946, when President Harry S. Truman proclaimed the termination of hostilities. Collection of these records started almost as soon as the Hawaii War Records Depository was established at the University of Hawaii in the spring of 1943. The Depository, set up as a result of cooperative action on the part of members of the faculty of the University, territorial legislators, and other public leaders, was authorized to collect and preserve all available historical records pertaining to Hawaii’s participation in World War II. One of its first projects was to assemble a file of biographical data on men who had died in military service, which would become one of many sources from which information for this volume was gathered.

Complex Systems: Spanning Control and Computational Cybernetics: Foundations

This book, dedicated to Professor Georgi M. Dimirovski on his anniversary, contains new research directions, challenges, and many relevant applications related to many aspects within the broadly perceived areas of systems and control, including signal analysis and intelligent systems. The project comprises two volumes with papers written by well known and very active researchers and practitioners. The first volume is focused on more foundational aspects related to general issues in systems science and mathematical systems, various problems in control and automation, and the use of computational and artificial intelligence in the context of systems modeling and control. The second volume is concerned with a presentation of relevant applications, notably in robotics, computer networks, telecommunication, fault detection/diagnosis, as well as in biology and medicine, and economic, financial, and social systems too.

The Identity of German and Japanese Civil Law in Comparative Perspectives / Die Identität des deutschen und des japanischen Zivilrechts in vergleichender Betrachtung

  • Categories: Law

Developments of the law in Japan and in Germany provide ample reason for an inquiry into “The Identity of Japanese and German Civil Law”. Japanese civil law has a long tradition of absorbing and digesting foreign influences, - in particular from Germany, France, England and the United States. The absorption of foreign influences occurred on various levels: at the legislative level, in particular during the drafting process of the Civil Code, at the judicial level and in the field of scholarship. The reception of legal theories was followed by a unique process that has been characterised as “theory reception” (Kitagawa). Irrespective of such foreign influences, we can discern a unique...

Rising Sun

It is the summer of 1942 and what our historians have called the Incredible Victory in the Battle of Midway has become a horrendous disaster in this world. Two of Americas handful of carriers in the Pacific have blundered into a Japanese submarine picket line and have been sunk, while a third is destroyed the next day. The United States has only one carrier remaining in the Pacific against nine Japanese, while the ragtag remnants of U.S. battleships _ an armada still reeling from the defeat at Pearl Harbor _ are in even worse shape. Now the Pacific belongs to the Japanese. And it doesnt stop there, as Japan has thrust her sword in to the hilt. Alaska is invaded. Hawaii is under blockade....
