The daring, mischievous micro-essays of award-winning French humorist Éric Chevillard, published in English for the first time Éric Chevillard is one of France's leading stylists and thinkers, an endlessly inventive observer of the everyday whose erudition and imagination honor the legacy of Swift and Voltaire--with some good-natured postmodern twists. This ensemble of comic miniatures compiles reflections on chairs, stairs, stones, goldfish, objects found, strangers observed, scenarios imagined, reasonable premises taken to absurd conclusions, and vice versa. The author erects a mental museum for his favorite artworks, only to find it swarming with tourists. He attends a harpsichord recit...
For many years diagnosing macular edema at an early stage has been a main difficulty. Recently, multiple and remarkable advances of modern imaging technologies which allow recognition of the main etiologies, have immensely improved its diagnosis and treatment. In this volume different patterns and etiologies of macular edema are described and the importance of preserving the photoreceptors at an early stage in order to retain center visual acuity is discussed. It brings together the most recent data and evidence-based medicine, and, on the other hand, the pathophysiological basis of macular edema and the different approaches for drug delivery to the posterior segment are presented. Recommendations for treatment procedures or different therapies have been carefully analyzed and considered prior to inclusion. 'Macular Edema - A Practical Approach' provides the ophthalmologist with a synthesis of knowledge to diagnose, to determine etiology, and to offer the patient viable treatment options for his benefit.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Ophthalmic Medical Image Analysis, OMIA 2021, held in conjunction with the 24th International Conference on Medical Imaging and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2021, in Strasbourg, France, in September 2021.* The 20 papers presented at OMIA 2021 were carefully reviewed and selected from 31 submissions. The papers cover various topics in the field of ophthalmic medical image analysis and challenges in terms of reliability and validation, number and type of conditions considered, multi-modal analysis (e.g., fundus, optical coherence tomography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy), novel imaging technologies, and the effective transfer of advanced computer vision and machine learning technologies. *The workshop was held virtually.
This book explains how to use intravitreal steroids optimally in the management of patients with intraocular inflammation (uveitis) and macular edema. The rationale for this treatment approach is first explained by examining the pathophysiology of these disease entities, with particular attention to the major role of inflammatory processes. Devices for the delivery of steroids to the eye are discussed, and guidance provided on the role of imaging studies before, during, and after steroid therapy. The value of different steroidal approaches is then considered in detail. Other topics addressed include the use of steroids as a surgical adjunct and within a combination strategy. Uveitis and macular edema are common sight-threatening diseases or complications of diabetes and retinal vein occlusion for which no adequate treatment was available until recently. Both trainees and practitioners will find Intravitreal Steroids to be an invaluable aid in combating these blinding diseases.
Because of its many advantages optical coherence tomography (OCT) has revolutionized the way in which retinal diseases are screened and managed and how treatments are monitored. In this volume the latest developments and findings are presented by experts in their respective fields. After a short introduction covering the available equipment and the basic techniques, the imaging features of various pathological findings in retinal diseases are presented. The topics cover the outer layers including new modalities for choroid imaging, out-layer diseases such as the various types of macular degeneration, retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and vascular occlusion, and retina and vitreou...
