Fraîchement élu député du Tiers état aux Etats Généraux de 1789, Maximilien de Robespierre a enfin l'occasion de faire entendre la voix du peuple. Ambitieux, humaniste et très à l'aise en public, il mène alors de front plusieurs combats (l'abolition de la peine de mort, le suffrage universel masculin...) et ne tarde pas à devenir une figure de proue de la Révolution française. Son expérience en tant qu'avocat défenseur des opprimés se traduit politiquement par un soutien sans faille à l'idée de démocratie. Et même si, personnellement, il méprise la violence et tentera de nombreuses fois de calmer le jeu, il assumera celle qui se fera en son nom. Il sait que le pouvoir au peuple ne se donne pas.
