Divine Presence

"The glory of the LORD," a phrase used over one hundred times in the Bible, describes God's greatness and transcendence. This complex theological concept exhibits several natural elements which describe a theophany, a personification of God in the forces of nature. Thus, a theophany--the appearance of God in a visible form--is the physical manifestation of the divine presence most frequently associated with a storm. Of all the biblical accounts that illustrate the glory of the LORD, the narrative of Moses' encounter with God on Mount Sinai (Horeb) contains nineteen of the twenty-one elements that reveal the glory of the LORD: mountains, sacred numbers, God's voice, people's (person's) response, cloud, water, thunder, lightning, trumpet blast, smoke, fire, earthquake, terms of the event (covenant), sign, transformation of witnesses, altar, feast (meal), wind, light and darkness, jewels (precious stones), and dreams. Each element is examined closely using biblical texts that best illustrate it.

Sounding Dissent

The signing of the Good Friday Agreement on April 10, 1998, marked the beginning of a new era of peace and stability in Northern Ireland. As the public overwhelmingly rejected a return to the violence of the Troubles, loyalist and republican groups sought other outlets to continue their struggle. Music, which has long been used to celebrate cultural identity in the North of Ireland, became a key means of facilitating the continuation of pre-Agreement identity narratives in a “post-conflict” era. Sounding Dissent draws on three years of sustained fieldwork within Belfast's rebel music scene, in-depth interviews with republican musicians, contemporary audiences, and former paramilitaries, as well as diverse historical and archival material, including songbooks, prison records, and newspaper articles, to understand the history of political violence in Ireland. The book examines the potential of rebel songs to memorialize a pantheon of republican martyrs, and demonstrates how musical performance and political song not only articulate experiences and memories of oppression and violence, but also play a central role in the reproduction of conflict and exclusion in times of peace.

Life-study of Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew reveals that Christ is God incarnated to be the King-Savior who came to establish the kingdom of the heavens by saving His people from sin through His death and resurrection. Christ, as the son of David according to the flesh, came as the proper heir to the throne of David; as God incarnate, He came as the first God-man. God named Him Jesus, yet He was called Emmanuel (“God with us”) by men. As the new King, Christ was recommended by John, anointed by the Spirit, and tested by the devil. Having defeated the devil, He began His ministry to establish the kingdom of the heavens. Matthew presents the kingdom of the heavens in three aspects, the reality of the kingdom of...

Gender Agenda Matters

In the last two decades, feminism has often been declared dead. One reason for this was the overwhelming success of gender and queer studies; another was supposedly nurtured by the hope of conservatives that girls and women should return to that which is traditionally perceived as “female”. This volume, which brings together the most interesting papers of the feminist exegesis section of the recent International Meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature, offers vivid proof that feminist studies did not lose their appeal to young scholars, and that there is still enough potential for fresh and interesting research in this field. Gender agendas still matter, especially when the feminist option is not forfeited as a political aim.

Matthew

The Texts @ Contexts series gathers scholarly voices from diverse contexts and social locations to bring new or unfamiliar facets of biblical texts to light. Matthew sheds new light from new perspectives on themes in the Gospel including community; land, labor, and Empire; children, parents, and families; health and disabilities; and border-crossings. The authors challenge us to consider how we deal with cultural distances between ourselves and these ancient writings—and between one another in the contemporary world.
