Excerpt from Trial of Matt, F. Ward: For the Murder of Prof. Butler, Before the Hardin Criminal Court, April Term 1854 Doctors Thomson and Flint, who examined the wound of Mr. Butler, were then interrogated. Doctor Thomson said that he examined the deceased first, and stated that his death was caused by a pistol shot, the ball having passed through the left breast, penetrating the cavity, and severing the lungs. The Doctor further testified, that Mr. Butler informed him that Matt. F. Ward cursed, and then struck him, and they clenched, when he received the shot, the muzzle of the pistol sticking to his coat.
