Phytochemical Profiling of Commercially Important South African Plants comprises a carefully selected group of plant species that are of interest to researchers and industry partners who would like to investigate the commercialization of plant species. The book presents 25 botanicals selected based on commercial relevance. For each of the species, the following topics are covered: botanical description and distribution, phytochemistry (including chemical structures), HPTLC fingerprint analysis, UPLC analysis, and GC analysis (the latter only in the case of essential oil-bearing species). Using standard methodology, high-level chromatographic fingerprints have been developed for better unders...
The South African Herbal Pharmacopeia: Monographs of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants is a collection of 25 original monographs of medicinal plants that are currently under commercialization or have the potential for commercialization into herbal medicinal products for the global marketplace. Chapters include a general overview covering synonyms, common names, conservation status, botany, geographical distribution, ethnopharmacology, commercialization, pharmacological evaluation, chemical profiling and quality control, including HPTLC fingerprint analysis, UPLC analysis, gas chromatography and mid-infrared spectroscopy analysis. Academics researching pharmacy and analytical chemistry will benef...
The tropical rain forests have become an important focus in the search for new drugs from natural sources, especially from plants. This volume aims to promote a better understanding between scientists and institutions located in the developed and developing countries, in their efforts to search for new medicinal agents from the plants of these forests. The papers have been contributed by scientists and researchers from both developed and developing countries worldwide, and cover issues relevant to biodiversity prospecting activities. Such issues include rules and regulations on the collection of genetic materials for biological testing; logistical and technical challenges to be faced; sharing the benefits of discovery; patent protection for the discovery of potentially useful drug candidates; intellectual property rights; and indigenous property rights. The volume will be invaluable in achieving more fruitful collaborative efforts between scientists from different countries and different institutional affiliations, in their search for new drugs from tropical forest plants.
The African Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AfrHP) provides comprehensive, up to date botanical, commercial and phytochemical information on over fifty of the most important African medicinal plants. The technical data were made on plant samples sourced from across the continent. These monographs prepared by leading African scientists, have been reviewed by international experts. Additional data includes micro morphology of the plant material, distribution maps and TLC Chromatograms. These data are crucial for producers, collectors and traders in medicinal plants and extracts as well as researchers, manufacturers and practitioners. The scope, quality and standard of these herbal monographs are comparable to those prepared in Europe, North America and Asia. Whilst this is the very first edition, it is being proposed to proceed to a second edition, quickly, as more plant species will be covered.
An all-inclusive guide on the analytical methods of Raman, infrared, and near-infrared chemical imaging An underutilized technology, chemical imaging through Raman, infrared (IR), and near-infrared (NIR) is beginning to gain recognition for its non-destructive method of permitting visualization of spatially resolved chemical information. This type of analysis is triggering a groundswell of demand as manufactured materials become more complex and the need for greater scrutiny and less damaging research practices is at a premium. Concentrating on the applications of chemical imaging, this book presents a thorough background on the theory, software, and hardware employed in this analytical tech...
"Planting the Future" shows how land stewardship, habitat protection, and sustainable cultivation are of critical importance to ensure an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for future generations.
This book introduces “network pharmacology” as an emerging frontier subject of systematic drug research in the era of artificial intelligence and big data. Network Pharmacology is an original subject of fusion system biology, bioinformatics, network science and other related disciplines. It emphasizes on starting from the overall perspective of the system level and biological networks, the analysis of the laws of molecular association between drugs and their treatment objects, reveals the systematic pharmacological mechanisms of drugs, and guides the research and development of new drugs and clinical diagnosis and treatment. After it was proposed, network pharmacology has been paid atten...
While there is a nearly universal agreement that drinking tea can benefit health, information on the benefits or adverse effects of drinking tea is scattered, leaving definitive answers difficult to ascertain. Tea in Health and Disease Prevention, Second Edition, once again addresses this problem, bringing together all the latest and most relevant information on tea and its health effects into one comprehensive resource. This book covers compounds in black, green, and white teas and explores their health implications, first more generally, then in terms of specific organ systems and diseases. With over 75% brand new content, this fully reorganized, updated edition covers a wider range of tea...
Antibiotic Resistance: Mechanisms and New Antimicrobial Approaches discusses up-to-date knowledge in mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and all recent advances in fighting microbial resistance such as the applications of nanotechnology, plant products, bacteriophages, marine products, algae, insect-derived products, and other alternative methods that can be applied to fight bacterial infections. Understanding fundamental mechanisms of antibiotic resistance is a key step in the discovery of effective methods to cope with resistance. This book also discusses methods used to fight antibiotic-resistant infection based on a deep understanding of the mechanisms involved in the development of the ...
