Quest for the Living God
'Since the middle of the twentieth century,' writes Elizabeth Johnson, 'there has been a renaissance of new insights into God in the Christian tradition. On different continents, under pressure from historical events and social conditions, people of faith have glimpsed the living God in fresh ways. It is not that a wholly different God is discovered from the One believed in by previous generations. Christian faith does not believe in a new God but, finding itself in new situations, seeks the presence of God there. Aspects long-forgotten are brought into new relationships with current events, and the depths of divine compassion are appreciated in ways not previously imagined.' This book sets out the fruit of these discoveries. Times are changing, and with them, the norms and notions of correctness. Despite a wide-spread belief that the Bible, as a “sacred original,” only allows one translation, if any, new translations are constantly produced and published for all kinds of audiences and purposes. The various paradigms marked by the theological, political, and historical correctness of the time, group, and identity and bound to certain ethics and axiomatic norms are reflected in almost every current translation project. A Theology of the Church for the Third Millennium
At the beginning of the new millennium, the Christian Churches are in a process of renewal. The Roman Catholic Church, since Vatican II, has been in a major stage of renewal. Contemporary globalization, multi-cultural interrelationships, and inter-religious dialogues have presented serious challenges to these renewal efforts. In this volume, I want to offer to the Catholic Renewal and from there to other denominational renewals, a view of the church from the rich tradition of Franciscan philosophy and theology. To date there are a only a few books which include small essays on this theme. This volume presents an in-depth Franciscan approach to ecclesiology.
Always Being Reformed
One of the most persistent slogans of Reformed theology is that it is "reformed and always being reformed." But what does this slogan mean? This volume gathers thirteen essays written by a younger generation of Reformed theologians who teach and write on five different continents, who together offer this work in Christian systematic theology. Unlike many other works of Reformed theology, however, this book is framed by pressing contextual issues and questions (instead of traditional loci). Each chapter engages classical doctrine, but does so through the lens of contemporary, lived experience in particular contexts. The result is not a theology where doctrines are "applied" to contexts, but an approach where doctrine and context mutually shape one another. The contributors take seriously the notion that theology is "always being reformed" and is always partial, ever on the way--hence it requires conversation partners beyond the Reformed family of faith. The result is a study in Reformed theology that is thoroughly ecumenical.
Rage in the Belly
How is rage related to hunger? Hunger is a liminal experience, connected to powerlessness, shame, and violence. Hunger does not issue into speech. It cannot therefore be easily found in the biblical texts, written by (and about) people who knew hunger. It hides behind the words in these texts. Rage, conversely, finds expression; and in the texts, it can alert readers to hidden experiences of hunger. But rage is not just a response to the lack of food. It is also a transformative force, reaching towards a justice that is not yet real. The experience of hunger and the fear of famine often go hand in hand with anger--a rage that can bring whole populations to their feet. Luzia Sutter Rehmann develops a biblical hermeneutic that centers on the "fire" in the belly of the hungry, their rage that leads to protests and uprisings. Her reading shows "the poor" or "the many" as those with whom Jesus cooperates and as subjects acting on their own initiative. The book also highlights key socio-historical information on the food situation of ancient Rome and Palestine: on poverty, political dependence and unrest, droughts, and famines.
