Finding opportunities for innovation on the path between farmer and table. Even if we think we know a lot about good and healthy food—even if we buy organic, believe in slow food, and read Eater—we probably don't know much about how food gets to the table. What happens between the farm and the kitchen? Why are all avocados from Mexico? Why does a restaurant in Maine order lamb from New Zealand? In Food Routes, Robyn Metcalfe explores an often-overlooked aspect of the global food system: how food moves from producer to consumer. She finds that the food supply chain is adapting to our increasingly complex demands for both personalization and convenience—but, she says, it won't be an easy...

Studio Rally

  • Categories: Art

On the first weekend in October, Nova Scotia artists and artisans throw open their studio doors, and locals and tourists alike, Studio Rally maps in hand, hit the highways and byways to pay a few calls. In 1992, Adriane Abbott, a Halifax textile artist, and Beverly McClare, a Grand Pre basket-maker, developed the Studio Rally tour to help artists and craftspeople sell their works. Since then, Studio Rally has become an exciting year-round component of Nova Scotia cultural life. In "Studio Rally: Art and Craft of Nova Scotia," Robin Metcalfe takes his own journey through the art and craft landscape of Nova Scotia, introducing fifty-two of the province's artists and craftspeople and their highly professional yet dramatically different works. He recounts his visits to artists as varied as folk carvers Bradford and Ransford Naugler, painter Joy Laking, and potter Sally Ravindra, and studios as different as John Little's East Dover forge and silk-weaver Del Zoppo's cabin in Cape Breton. Portraits of the people and their works by Julian Beveridge, David Livingston, and other expert art photographers create a sumptuous overview of a cultural scene that's full of beauty and surprise.

This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re...

Image and Inscription features the work of many of Canada’s distinguished authors, critics, curators, and artists who are recognized for their contribution to the discourse and practice of photography... it presents the diversity and the changeable milieu of photographic practice and evokes an unanticipated moment in Canadian photography. It also represents an important step in expanding the contemporary authorship on photography in Canada." - adapted from the Introduction by Robert Bean
