Statistical Mechanics of Learning
Learning is one of the things that humans do naturally, and it has always been a challenge for us to understand the process. Nowadays this challenge has another dimension as we try to build machines that are able to learn and to undertake tasks such as datamining, image processing and pattern recognition. We can formulate a simple framework, artificial neural networks, in which learning from examples may be described and understood. The contribution to this subject made over the last decade by researchers applying the techniques of statistical mechanics is the subject of this book. In our time, the exchange of gifts plays a great role in promoting unity of the Churches. Especially the concepts of African theology with the incomparable special position of Jesus Christ as "proto ancestor" are important for the interconfessional dialogues. The veneration of the ancestors in Africa can be a help to begin ecumenical discussions in this regional context on the question of the veneration of the saints. According to African tradition the ancestors also have influence on the process of purification. Therefore, the veneration of the ancestors contributes to providing answers to the ecumenical controversies about the understanding of the eschatological purification.

Adaptivity and learning have in recent decades become a common concern of scientific disciplines. These issues have arisen in mathematics, physics, biology, informatics, economics, and other fields more or less simultaneously. The aim of this publication is the interdisciplinary discourse on the phenomenon of learning and adaptivity. Different perspectives are presented and compared to find fruitful concepts for the disciplines involved. The authors select problems showing representative traits concerning the frame up, the methods and the achievements rather than to present extended overviews.
