The Wondrous Story of Anesthesia

Edited and written by an international "who's who" of more than 100 authors, including anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, bench scientists, a surgeon, and representatives of industry, this text provides a comprehensive history of anesthesia, unique in its focus on the people and events that shaped the specialty around the world, particularly during the past 70 years when anesthesia emerged from empiricism and developed into a science-based practice.

Winner of the ACT Book of the Year Award Shortlisted for the Ernest Scott Prize and CHASS Australia Prize It was the era of Hawke and Keating, Kylie and INXS, the America's Cup and the Bicentenary. It was perhaps the most controversial decade in Australian history, with high-flying entrepreneurs booming and busting, torrid debates over land rights and immigration, the advent of AIDS, a harsh recession and the rise of the New Right. It was a time when Australians fought for social change - on union picket lines, at rallies for women's rights and against nuclear weapons, and as part of a new environmental movement. And then there were the events that left many scratching their heads- Joh for Canberra . . . the Australia Card . . . Cliff Young. In The Eighties, Frank Bongiorno brings all this and more to life. He sheds new light on 'both the ordinary and extraordinary things that happened to Australia and Australians during this liveliest of decades'. 'The definitive account of an inspired, infuriating decade' - George Megalogenis 'A very impressive achievement' - The Monthly 'Meaty and entertaining' - The Australian

Malignant Hyperthermia

In susceptible individuals, malignant hyperthermia (MH) can be triggered by various anesthetics during surgery. First described in 1960, research since then has concentrated on reducing the very high mortality rate associated with MH. Although significant progress in treatment has been made with the introduction of dantrolene sodium in 1979, many questions remain unanswered. Following on the results of more than 30 years of investigative efforts, the Third International Symposium on MH was held in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1994, immediately before the Seventh International Workshop on MH. Specialists in the field discussed the most up-to-date findings from the point of view of clinical classification, history, and incidence based on the evidence of epidemiology, diagnostic muscle testing, genetics, and biochemistry. These proceedings of the symposium present important keys to understanding the mechanism of MH and related syndromes at the genetic level and include procedures for the monitoring and care of patients. This volume will be invaluable not only for surgeons and anesthesiologists but also for physiologists and researchers.

Experimental Malignant Hyperthermia

Malignant hyperthermia is a genetic disease that causes an extremely high body temperature. The syndrome is triggered by depolarizing muscle relaxants and halogenated gaseous anesthetics, such as halothane. The purpose of the book is to present the latest experimental work and important conclusions to anesthesiologists, surgeons, certified registered nurse anesthesists, operating nurses, cardiovascular and temperature oriented physiologists, basic research scientists interested in heat production in muscle, animal scientists, primarily swine physiologists, and finally, muscle biology scientists. The results are based on sixteen years of experimental investigations with a malignant hypertherm...

Description PDQ Medical Genetics challenges students to learn to think genetically, to recognize genetic factors, and to explain genetics to patients. The author presents an approach to solving clinical problems with genetic components rather than on the presentation of facts that would soon fall out of date. The text is problem-oriented. Each chapter opens with a case scenario designed to direct the student toward learning both the clinical and the basic biological science. The featured scenarios also provide direction in the dealing with a patient's, and family's, personal difficulties by listing genetic disease support groups. The informative text also emphasizes how to go about obtaining...

ISSUES ON WAR & PEACE

These proceedings carry some of the papers delivered at the 14th Biennial Labour History Conference, 11-13 February 2015. Titled Fighting Against War: Peace Activism in the Twentieth Century, the conference was held at the University of Melbourne. A conference book of refereed papers has been published under that title and these proceedings carry the non-refereed papers received for publication. There is one exception to that rule: the paper written by Warwick Eather and Drew Cottle, published below, which underwent double-blind refereeing. It is an important paper, which demonstrates with compelling evidence that the rabbit was anything but a curse to the many men, women, and children who t...
