Auschwitz, the Allies and Censorship of the Holocaust

What was the extent of allied knowledge regarding the mass murder of Jews at Auschwitz during the Second World War? The question is one which continues to prompt heated historical debate, and Michael Fleming's important new book offers a definitive account of just how much the Allies knew. By tracking Polish and other reports about Auschwitz from their source, and surveying how knowledge was gathered, controlled and distributed to different audiences, the book examines the extent to which information about the camp was passed on to the British and American authorities, and how the dissemination of this knowledge was limited by propaganda and information agencies in the West. In a fascinating new study, the author reveals that the Allies had extensive knowledge of the mass killing of Jews at Auschwitz much earlier than previously thought; but the publicising of this information was actively discouraged in Britain and the US.

This book will be of major interest to student teachers, teachers, lecturers and researchers. It provides a case for an integrated approach to the teaching of drama in primary and secondary schools that will help practitioners develop a theoretical rationale for their work. It also offers practical examples of lesson plans and schemes of work designed to give pupils a broad and balanced experience of drama. These are presented within a framework that argues for an integration of content and form, means and ends, and internal and external experience. Whereas the author's previous work argued for an inclusive approach that reconciled polarized views about performance drama and improvisation, this book shows how those activities can be related to each other in practice in an integrated curriculum.

In a Mirror Dimly

In a Mirror Dimly

Through the years of his education, training, work as a family physician, and life situations, author Dr. Michael Fleming realized every experience had a story. In a Mirror Dimly, he shares a collection of these stories, reflecting his love for them and his talent for telling them. This compilation includes Fleming’s random thoughts and observations as he’s traveled his path: an early life filled with insecurity and shame; a young adult life with too much wasted; an adult life blessed with love and family, a wife, children, and grandchildren; and now his final seasons that have been given light through God’s grace. Derived from a life of curiosity, some of the stories are edgy and others not exactly politically correct. They represent a reflection of the many mentors who guided him, the experiences that molded him, the love of his life who traveled these paths with him, and the observations of someone who has ever been curious about “why” we are, and “how” do we make the best of it all.

More people today can name the members of the Three Stooges than can name three justices of the Supreme Court. The Stooges are comedy icons whose enduring appeal and slapstick legacy have made them one of the most famous and beloved comedy troupes in the world. Michael Fleming's The Three StoogesTM is the first complete, authorized biography of the men who made pie fights part of our national cultural heritage. A juggernaut of wise guys, headlocks, and unforgettable insults, this book tells the whole history of the Stooges, starting with their origins in the golden years of vaudeville, when the boys from Brooklyn honed their craft. Moe, Curly, and Shemp Howard were born Moses, Jerome, and Sa...

What is compelling about Bags and Tools is its reach for a "we." The "we" was open enough and varied enough to encompass a wide swath of people(s) but did not assume a sameness--indeed, it sought in part to elucidate the matter of difference through questioning--it is nuanced and insightful. Much of this author's work is the same, plain-spoken, but upon reading it presents its concerns. What is in the bag of the speaker who presents themself as a would-be vagabond, a wayward traveler? A curious mind, a passionate search for a larger framework (God, Love) through what the reader could think of as letters to beloveds as much as dedications where names are cited. This is a book to read again, then again. It is the speaker's trying that is so relatable. The skein is thin here, so author and speaker are close. Michael Fleming effectively uses the tools of craft to take us along on this narrow path that widens and promises to open into broad understanding.

Sing With Me

No matter what language a child speaks, nursery rhymes can be a fun way to increase the ability to identify and manipulate letters’ sounds, as well as practice language rhythms. With that in mind, a seasoned art teacher introduces the young Chinese reader to the basic units that comprise the English language through five beautifully illustrated nursery rhymes. Michael Fleming has made it his mission to bridge the cultures of English and Chinese speakers and provide a greater understanding and appreciation of each culture through such nursery rhymes as “Hey Diddle Diddle,” “Little Miss Muffet,” ”Jack Be Nimble,” “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” and “Rock-a-Bye Baby.” Presented in both English and Chinese, the nursery rhymes lead Chinese readers through English language fundamentals and introduce English speakers to the characters of the Chinese language. Sing with Me provides a intriguing journey through both languages that not only educates students but also encourages acceptance of other cultures.
