The Habsburg Monarchy has received much historiographical attention since 1945. Yet the military aspects of Austria’s emergence as a European great power in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have remained obscure. This book shows that force of arms and the instruments of the early modern state were just as important as its marriage policy in creating and holding together the Habsburg Monarchy. Drawing on an impressive up-to-date bibliography as well as on original archival research, this survey is the first to put Vienna’s military back at the centre stage of early modern Austrian history.

The formation of modern European states during the long 19th century was a complicated process, challenged by the integration of widely different territories and populations. The Science of State Power in the Habsburg Monarchy, 1790-1880 builds on recent research to investigate the history of statistics as an overlooked part of the sciences of the state in Habsburg legal education as well as within the broader public sphere. By exploring the practices and social spaces of statistics, author Borbála Zsuzsanna Török uncovers its central role in imagining the composite Habsburg Monarchy as a modern and unified administrative space.
Verwaltungsgeschichte der Habsburgermonarchie in der Frühen Neuzeit
Der erste Band des umfassenden neuen Handbuchs ist dem Kaiserhof, den Zentralbehörden der Monarchie und dem Verhältnis zwischen dem Kaiser, seinen Erbländern und dem Heiligen Römischen Reich gewidmet. Die Darstellung der Entwicklung des Kriegswesens, des landesfürstlichen Finanzwesens sowie der Kommerzbehörden und des Postwesens erfolgt in eigenen Abschnitten.
