Alex North (1910-1991) was one of America's most renowned film composers. His musical scores enhanced more than 60 major motion pictures--A Streetcar Named Desire, Cleopatra and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf among them. He had 15 Oscar nominations, and received the Lifetime Achievement Oscar. This book begins with his early life in Pennsylvania, and moves through his studies at Juilliard and in Russia and Mexico, his early experiences in modern dance, documentaries, and theater, and his major work in film. The book also offers analyses of North's musical scores for Streetcar, Spartacus, The Misfits, Under the Volcano, and Prizzi's Honor. Appendices include a bibliography, a filmography, a listing of other North compositions, a discography, and a listing of awards.

Projecting the Holocaust into the Present

Most Holocaust scholars and survivors contend that the event was so catastrophic and unprecedented that it defies authentic representation in feature films. Yet it is precisely the extremity of 'the Final Solution' and the issues it raised that have fueled the cinematic imagination since the end of World War II. Recognizing that movies reach a greater audience than eyewitness, historical, or literary accounts, Lawrence Baron argues that they mirror changing public perceptions of the Holocaust over time and place. Alternative Scriptwriting 4E is an insightful and inspiring book on screenwriting concerned with challenging you to take creative risks with genre, tone, character, and structure. Concerned with exploring alternative approaches beyond the traditional three-act structure, Alternative Scriptwriting first defines conventional approach, suggests alternatives, then provides case studies. These contemporary examples and case studies demonstrate what works, what doesn't, and why. Because the film industry as well as the public demand greater and greater creativity, one must go beyond the traditional three-act restorative and predictable plot to test your limits and break new creative ground. Rather than teaching writing in a tired formulaic manner, this book elevates the subject and provides inspiration to reach new creative heights.

The Last Butterfly

The Last Butterfly: Beautiful and heartbreaking ... It is in the changing of one man ... that one finds the most moving movements of the novel, as Antonin, the hasbeen clown, becomes a kind of hero of the human spirit. (Publisher's Weekly) There is a deftness and economy in Mr. Jacot's characterizations, and a sense of dread of such immediacy as to render the novel all too memorable. (Saturday Review/World). A simple unforgettable film unrolls before you as you read The Last Butterfly ... the horrors are implicit but hidden ... The happiness, the laughter, is as real as the despair. Ane more lasting. (Atlantic Monthly)
