The Spirit and the Letter
Paul's statement that 'letter kills but the spirit gives life' [2 Corinthians 3.6] has had an extraordinary impact on Christian thought through the ages. It has been read both as affirming the saving power of the new covenant in comparison to the old, and as a key to hidden, spiritual meanings in the text of scripture. It is, however, an ambiguous phrase, followed by a tangled story. This book explores the Pauline distinction both in its original context and in its aftermath in the early church, the Reformation and modern Biblical Studies. It then considers a postmodern reversal, where ideas of 'Spirit' are often seen as 'deadly' and the openness of the 'letter' or text as life-affirming, and draws conclusions for Spirit in the world.

The doctrine of justification is of highest importance for evangelical theology. But regarding their understanding of liturgy Orthodox and Roman-Catholic churches seem to be more aware of the priority of God's doing than protestant churches. This book, building on ecumenical liturgical theology from North America and from Italy, suggests the possibility for the churches of the Reformation to find in the worship service the place where justification can become actual experience. Recent anthropological studies, as presented in Italian liturgical theology, lead to an understanding of the liturgical experience which integrates bodily and intellectual dimensions and might even open up to new ways of intercultural dialogue.

Das im Titel dieser Arbeit angegebene Leitwort "Homiletische Transkreation" beschreibt eine gattungsexegetische und gattungshomiletische Rehabilitierung des klassisch gewordenen Schemas "Vom Text zur Predigt". Der Begriff der "Gattung" hilft Exegese und Homiletik dabei, die Vielfalt von Text- und Redeformen zu beschreiben. Anhand einer literaturwissenschaftlichen und rhetorischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Gattungsbegriff entwickelt Manuel Gräßlin eine theoriebildende und handlungsorientierte Reflexions- und Konzeptionshilfe für die Beschreibung und Erstellung von Predigten. Die Arbeit wirbt für eine kriterienorientierte Klassifizierung von Gattungen anhand ihrer Form, ihres Inhalts und ihrer Funktion. Dadurch soll eine kreative Übersetzung des Bibeltextes in die Predigtrede, bei Beachtung der wechselseitigen Beeinflussung von Text und Rede, gelingen. Das Werk leistet einen Beitrag zu einer konsequent ästhetisch formatierten biblischen Homiletik.
