When Michael Foot died in March this year, an era of British politics seemed to have ended. The tributes and outpourings of respect and admiration revealed that someone important in the life of the nation had departed. One of the shortcomings of the biographies of Michael Foot has been that, in the opinion of many who knew him, they do not get close enough to Michael the man, at home and as a private individual. The biographies do not do justice to the quality and passion of Foot's writing, nor to the critical faculties he brought to bear on the books and authors he read so voraciously. In the wake of Michael Foot's death earlier this year, this volume of appreciation of Michael Foot's extraordinary life includes essays on the orator, the politician, the writer and the man of great passions, as well as essays on his late wife, Jill Craigie, and their long marriage together. Contributors include Mark Seddon, Ian Aitken, William Keegan, Peter Henessy and Michael Cockeril.
Every business needs a website - plain and simple. In this day and age, if you're not showing up when people search out your business, products or services online, you're heading for trouble.A website is one of the most significant assets for any business. It's a 24×7 salesperson for your company or brand. Your website can (and will), either attract, or repel, would-be-customers, long before they ever talk to a real person in your business. What most business owners don't realize (because the majority of website design agencies don't want you to know), is that the website itself is only a very small part of your online presence. And it's the things you do before building your website, and the things you do after it's launched, that lead to real business growth. If you want your website to become your single biggest source of new customers - and you want to capture more market share from your competition (a lot more), then this book is for you. An effective website should drive business growth (and revenue), above all else. And in this book we'll show you how to make that happen.
The Google Maps API remains one of the showcase examples of the Web 2.0 development paradigm. In fact, interest in the Google service is so strong that it arguably sparked the mashup phenomenon. This is the first book to comprehensively introduce the service from a developer perspective, showing readers how they can integrate mapping features into their Web applications. Proceeding far beyond creating a simplistic map display, readers are shown how to draw upon a variety of data sources such as geocode.us and the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line data to build comprehensive geocoding services for mapping any location in North America.

This story is about a land takeover in Texas by a scheming Union major and his two nephews. Unfortunately for them it was the ranch that belonged to John Lee Johnsons father. The hard-charging Texan leaves his soldierly duties with the approbation of his superiors and returns over many miles, meting out justice and mercy on his way. He encounters many problems and adventures on his way much like Ulysses on his way home from Troy.
The Google Maps API is a showcase example of the Web 2.0 development paradigm, designed to be invitingly simple for developers to incorporate dynamic mapping services into Web applications. Beginning Google Maps Applications with Rails and Ajax takes a developer’s perspective, showing how to integrate mapping features into their Rails-driven Web applications. The book shows how to draw on data sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line data and Google's own geocoding feature to build comprehensive geocoding services. The book includes guided examples demonstrating how to encourage user interaction such as pinpointing map locations, adding comments, and building community-driven maps.
In November 1991 the American flag was lowered for the last time at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. This act brought to an end American military presence in the Philippines that extended back over 90 years. It also represented the final act in a drama that began with the initial rumblings in April of that year of the Mount inatubo volcano, located about nine miles to the east of Clark. This book tells the remarkable story of the men and women of the Clark community and their ordeal in planning for and carrying out their evacuation from Clark in face of the impending volcanic activity. It documents the actions of those who remained on the base during the series of Mount Pinatubo' s eruptions, and the packing out of the base during the subsequent months. This is the story of the Ash Warriors, those Air Force men and women who carried out their mission in the face of an incredible series of natural disasters, including volcanic eruption, flood, typhoons, and earthquakes, all of which plagued Clark and the surrounding areas during June and July 1991.
