This book originates from an international workshop on personal information held at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, UK, in June 1996. The workshop was organized under the joint sponsorship of the British Medical Association and the Isaac Newton Institute in the context of a six-month research program in computer security, cryptology, and coding theory. The revised workshop papers appearing in this volume reflect a lively interdisciplinary exchange of views and ideas between doctors, lawyers, privacy activists, and the computer security community. The volume gives a representative snapshot not merely of the state of the art of the medical computer security art in various countries, but of the complex interplay between human, political, and technical aspects.

This book explores the ethical governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML) in healthcare. AI/ML usage in healthcare as well as our daily lives is not new. However, the direct, and oftentimes long-term effects of current technologies, in addition to the onset of future innovations, have caused much debate about the safety of AI/ML. On the one hand, AI/ML has the potential to provide effective and efficient care to patients, and this sways the argument in favor of continuing to use AI/ML; but on the other hand, the dangers (including unforeseen future consequences of the further development of the technology) leads to vehement disagreement with further AI/ML usage. Due to its potential for beneficial outcomes, the book opts to push for ethical AI/ML to be developed and examines various areas in healthcare, such as big data analytics and clinical decision-making, to uncover and discuss the importance of developing ethical governance for AI/ML in this setting.
This volume contains the proceedings of the twenty-second International Conference on Medical Informatics Europe MIE 2009, that was held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from 30 August to 2 September 2009. China and the ASEAN region have risen rapidly to a position of immense economic significance in the global economy. This publication provides a forum for projects in the medical, biological and biomedical domains as well as for grid projects that seek to integrate these. The overall objective is to reinforce and promote the awareness of the deployment of grid technology in health. The emphasis is on results of current grid projects in health care. This will show in the outcome of field tests and will identify deployment strategies for prototype applications in health care. In addition, outstanding problem areas and technological challenges are identified and new solutions to these issues are proposed. From Grid to Healthgrid is divided in four themes: - Knowledge and Data Management - Deployments of Grids in Health - Current Projects and - Ethical, Legal, Social and Security Issues. The papers show that healthgrid has matured beyond its original projects and is now tackling some difficult problems that seemed intractable up till two years ago.
