This book provides a comprehensive overview of printmaking in South Africa, replacing the now outdated monograph by F. L. Alexander. It discusses historically artists who made major contributions within each of the printmaking techniques, giving great detail on contemporary South African art. It is also a handbook on artists working in various mediums and gives full explanations of each work chosen for the exhibition at the 1998 South African National Arts Festival, lists 785 known printmakers born after 1900, and illustrates the work of 89 important artists. It is an essential guide to this important aspect of South African art.
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. In the contemporary era, the subject of interculturalism is common in academic discussion however these questions of diversity and integration remain vague and in many cases the terminology is unconsolidated as its linguistic root – culture – remains equally ambiguous. As part of the Diversity and Recognition hub, the Inter-Disiplinary.Net project leading to this volume, brought together researchers from different disciplines to explore how these issues affect meaning and identity. Beyond The Mountain: Queer Life in "Africa’s Gay Capital" contributes to the body of knowledge on the lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) communities in Cape Town. The book provides insight on the lives of the LGBTQI communities in Cape Town and challenges the stereotypes and prejudices against these communities. The chapters consist of both narratives of lived experiences and academic discussions presented by novice as well as experienced scholars. The imagery of beyond the mountain is a depiction of the lives of LGBTQI community and immovable negative perceptions the general public have to them and seeks to expose their world and the kinds of violence and abuse they are subjected to, as well as unveiling the racial discrimination within these communities. The book revolves around five themes: education, emancipation, protection, acceptance, and integration of those who identify as LGBTQI people in society.
