The last decades of the 20th century were marked by the appearance of a new field of mathematics: computerized tomography. Its theory forms the basis for the solution of many applied problems. The methods of computerized tomography make it possible study the interior structure of a body by examining the characteristics of radiation passing through the object under study (transmission tomography). Depending on the type of radiation used, X-ray, optical, seismic, and some other kinds of tomography can be distinguished. Comparatively weakly researched, untraditional tomography problems are being solved because of new achievements in calculation mathematics and the theory of ill-posed problems (...

Inverse Problems and Carleman Estimates

This book summarizes the main analytical and numerical results of Carleman estimates. In the analytical part, Carleman estimates for three main types of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) are derived. In the numerical part, first numerical methods are proposed to solve ill-posed Cauchy problems for both linear and quasilinear PDEs. Next, various versions of the convexification method are developed for a number of Coefficient Inverse Problems.

There is a great international interest in theoretical and numerical analysis of tomography problems and their applications. This volume contains a selection of papers which were presented at the Fourth International Symposium on Computerized Tomography (CT-93), held in Novosibirsk, Russia, 10--14 August 1993. The main topics of the symposium were: -- mathematical problems of computerized tomography -- algorithms of computerized tomography -- tomography applications in physics, geophysics, industry and medicine

Dictionary of Minor Planet Names

The quantity of numbered minor planets has now well exceeded a quarter million. The new sixth edition of the Dictionary of Minor Planet Names, which is the IAU’s official reference work for the field, now covers more than 17,000 named minor planets. In addition to being of practical value for identification purposes, the Dictionary of Minor Planet Names provides authoritative information on the basis of the rich and colorful variety of ingenious names, from heavenly goddesses to artists, from scientists to Nobel laureates, from historical or political figures to ordinary women and men, from mountains to buildings, as well as a variety of compound terms and curiosities. This sixth edition of the Dictionary of Minor Planet Names has grown by more than 7,000 entries compared to the fifth edition and by more than 2,000 compared to the fifth edition, including its two addenda published in 2006 and 2009. In addition, there are many corrections, revisions and updates to the entries published in earlier editions. This work is an abundant source of information for anyone interested in minor planets and who enjoys reading about the people and things minor planets commemorate.

Qualitative theory of parabolic equations. 1

In the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations, the Liapunov method plays a fundamental role. To use their analogs for the analysis of stability of solutions to parabolic, hyperparabolic, and other nonclassical equations and systems, time-invariant a priori estimates have to be devised for solutions. In this publication only parabolic problems are considered. Here lie, mainly, the problems which have been investigated most thoroughly --- the construction of Liapunov functionals which naturally generalize Liapunov functions for nonlinear parabolic equations of the second order with one spatial variable. The authors establish stabilizing solutions theorems, and the necessary and sufficient conditions of general and asymptotic stability of stationary solutions, including the so-called critical case. Attraction domains for stable solutions of mixed problems for these equations are described. Furthermore, estimates for the number of stationary solutions are obtained.

Dictionary of Minor Planet Names

Dictionary of Minor Planet Names, Fifth Edition, is the official reference for the field of the IAU, which serves as the internationally recognised authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies and any surface features on them. The accelerating rate of the discovery of minor planets has not only made a new edition of this established compendium necessary but has also significantly altered its scope: this thoroughly revised edition concentrates on the approximately 10,000 minor planets that carry a name. It provides authoritative information about the basis for all names of minor planets. In addition to being of practical value for identification purposes, this collection provides a most interesting historical insight into the work of those astronomers who over two centuries vested their affinities in a rich and colorful variety of ingenious names, from heavenly goddesses to more prosaic constructions. The fifth edition serves as the primary reference, with plans for complementary booklets with newly named bodies to be issued every three years.

This book deals with the Rus annals (letopisi) and with a variety of related texts concerning the historical past. A new typology of those texts is introduced, together with a comprehensive discussion of how the writing of history came into being in Rus between c.1000 and c.1050. The author focuses on the work of the annalists of Novgorod from c. 1045 to c. 1400, and discusses the functions of annalistic writing in the Rus society. Both the character and the role of the writing of history in Rus is highlighted by means of comparison with other political and cultural areas of medieval Europe, particularly with Anglo-Saxon England.
