Richard Bater (1824-1890) was born in Chulmleigh, Devon, England. He married Margaret Graddon in 1847. They immigrated to the United States in 1851 and settled in Batavia, Genesee County, New York. In 1861 they moved to Hillsdale County, Michigan. Descendants and relatives lived in New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, Texas, Washington, California and elsewhere in the United States as well as in Canada.
