History taught at the elementary, middle, high school and even college levels often excludes significant events from African American history, such as the murder of Emmett Till or the murder of four black girls by the Ku Klux Klan in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. Such events are integral parts of history that continue to inform America's racial politics. Their exclusion is a problem that this work addresses by bringing more visibility to documentary films focusing on the events. Books treating the history of documentary films follow a similar pattern, omitting the efforts of filmmakers who have continued to focus on African American history. This book works to make documentary discourse more complete, bringing attention to films that cover the African American experience in four areas--civil rights, sports, electronic media, and the contemporary black struggle--demonstrating how the issues continue to inform America's racial politics.

He clings to his control by the razor-sharp edge of his fangs… During war between humans and Otherborn, FBI scientists developed a vaccine that rendered human blood useless to vampires, leaving Knox Deveraux’s immortal vampire clan longing for death. A woman he is forbidden to touch. She longs to satisfy the dark needs he ignites in her body… For FBI Special Agent Felicia Locke, Knox is off limits. No matter that his vampire bride—her best friend—is gone now; he’s duty bound to mate another vamp. If that locked door isn’t enough, his disdain for his half-human bloodline throws away the key. They both have a job to do, and desire has no place on the training schedule. But with betrayal lurking in the shadows, and a fractured team that seems hell-bent on self-destruction, Knox and Felicia may have no choice but to accept the truth—that their love is the strongest weapon of all.

Experiences of Women of Color in an Elite US Public School

This study explores the experiences of women of color who attended an elite, predominantly white public high school in the Northeastern United States through one of three points of entry: as town residents attending their local high school, or as commuter or boarding students via two distinct voluntary racial desegregation programs. Women in all three groups experience feelings of marginalization and stigma. At the same time, many also discuss the benefits of having lived in or attended school in this environment. Women developed strong internal bonds within and across their respective groups, some were able to racially diversify social networks and increase access to new forms of social capital through both their own initiatives and efforts on the part of adults in the school and community, and many also discuss the acquisition of elite forms of cultural capital that have served them into adulthood. Even with these general trends, point of access clearly mediates the experience, with geographic and symbolic boundaries varying by group.
