Insurrection

‘Damn bad place Sheffield,’ said King George Ill, reflecting on the town’s reputation as a hotbed of radicalism with revolutionary tendencies, a reputation it maintained for much of the 19th century, augmented by the numerous times that the Riot Act was read to the Sheffield mob. Yet few Sheffield riots were in the name of revolution. They were more to do with social inequalities, injustice and deprivation, only the Chartists’ rising and connections with the Pentrich rising came close to revolution. The price of provisions, the lack of democracy, oppression and perceived assaults on social norms by new religious movements were the dominant causal factors of social disorder in the She...

Intimidation

Anonymous threatening letters, hamstrung horses, arson attacks, beatings, 'rattenings', bombings, shootings and murders; all at the hands of trade union thugs, orchestrated by William Broadhead, the tyrannical saw grinders' union leader. Such is the folklore of the Sheffield Outrages. However, acts of intimidation against 'obnoxious' workers and defiant employers stretched beyond Sheffield and across many trades. The story of the Sheffield Outrages is not just about the infamy of William Broadhead and the saw grinders, it is about a way of life in 19th century Sheffield; it is about conflict between hard-working skilled men and their exploitative masters; it is about a time of transition in industrial relations and the development of trade unionism. The story of the Sheffield Outrages is a significant and important aspect of Sheffield's social history and for far too long has been an understated one. The Trust was formed in 1991 as a charity (no. 1003101) and company limited by guarantee No. 2608546). Our remit is to 'Make Sheffield 6 a better place to live and work'. Over the years the Trust has been involved in a wide variety of projects and activities, improving both the physical and social environment. We have been involved in everything from maintaining a local cemetery (Wardsend) to setting up community groups (Agewell, Hillsborough and Owlerton Local History Group). Encompassing environmental outreach work in the process, (litter picking, planting up and maintaining flower beds in the area). We are also the publishers of 'The Great Sheffield Flood' based on the lantern slide-show created by E. H. Draper at the time. Our flagship project is the Hillsborough Walled Garden (illustrated below), free to the public, open 7 days a week in summer. As well as a place for local people, and visitors from further afield to enjoy, the garden is used as the venue for volunteer work, work training and individual placements, activities and events, concerts, theatre, exhibitions, children's activities etc.

Sheffield 6 is a part of Sheffield which developed with the industrial revolution. From a few scattered rural settlements it grew to feature dense suburban housing. In the seventeenth century there were along the rivers both dwellings and small work places where knives were 'manufactured'.The water power was harnessed to turn water wheels that ran the machinery of the day. Today the suburb is largely lived in by ordinary working people but still there are the individual houses which were home to Lords of the Manor or those who were the managers of the firms which employed large numbers of those who lived in the newly built terraced housing which is such a feature of the locality. The book tells the story of some of the old houses and looks at factors which contributed to the making of the terraced and semi detached homes that line the many streets of the locality. In addition there are 'snapshots' of some of those who have lived in these homes.
