Transformative Arts

Traditional fine arts are often regarded as rarefied, something accessed by the uniquely talented and displayed in impressive museums or on lavish stages. Art thusly conceived is something that most people never practice in their lives. Yet in day-to-day life we all experience creative satisfaction through interaction with the physical and social environment that is a form of artistic practice. In Transformative Arts: Biological, Digital, and Everyday Aesthetics, Gary A. Berg explores what we gain through understanding ways to live imaginative lives and considers the increasingly important collaborative role of computers and interaction with nature.

The four LNCS volume set 9175-9178 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Learning and Collaboration Technologies, UAHCI 2015, held as part of the 17th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2015, in Los Angeles, CA, USA in August 2015, jointly with 15 other thematically similar conferences. The total of 1462 papers and 246 posters presented at the HCII 2015 conferences were carefully reviewed and selected from 4843 submissions. These papers of the four volume set address the following major topics: LNCS 9175, Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction: Access to today's technologies (Part I), addressing the following major topic...

PhanFood

Like the band they follow from city to city, Phish fans have their own history of creativity, which in turn follows them wherever they go—even into the kitchen. Edited by Taraleigh Weathers (Healthy Hippie Magazine) and Pete Mason (Phanart: The Art of the Fans of Phish), PhanFood bring together many of the recipes that Phish fans have made and shared over the years. Included are appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches, entrees, desserts, drinks (with and without alcohol), and a variety of other concoctions that Phish fans enjoy while they are in the lots, at the site, or just sitting at home waiting for the next tour to be announced. PhanFood is also a wholly nonprofit endeavor, with all net...

The mesoscale atmospheric structure in and around regions of clear air turbulence (CAT) is investigated. It is shown that the formation and dissipation of clear air turbulence at several different altitudes is closely related to changes in the atmospheric mesostructure. The turbulence is located in the region of two sloping boroclinic zones and can be attributed to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability resulting from strong wind directional oscillations between these two stable layers. The meteorological sounding data reveal that the lower stable layer and the layer of strong directional oscillations undergo significant upward vertical displacement. The change in turbulence activity can be directly correlated with this motion, and the breakdown of the turbulence and the double stability structure occur almost simultaneously. (Author).

Plants by Numbers

"This open access book takes a queer feminist technoscience approach to the ecologies that emerge from our entanglements with nonhumans (air, rocks, algae, trees, soil and plants) and computational hard/software. Artists, feminist techno-scientists and theorists working with computation, Plants by Numbers address the current need to think beyond the human paradigm, opening up new fields of debate that question the troubled relationship between ecosystems and human technology. Organised around three key themes - techno-nature entanglements, plants as resistant agents, and becoming-with-plants - the volume provides a vital pathway through complex theoretical ideas that inform the practices of ...
